Just don't ask "who's on first?"...I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Now that’s showing both your ages, I deffo had to google that.
Now watching the 2nd day of Giants vs Fighters, just hope the Giants do better today. They lost yesterday 5 - 4, but they are 8 - 1 up today.
Tucked up in a hotel in Kushiro, off to look for dinner in a few minutes, feast of Ghengis Kahn yesterday is wearing off at last.
Couple of random pics.
SWMBO’s view for a while yesterday.

And great view over the harbour at Kushiro. Would be a nice sunset but for the weather.

Right, rest of pics. Not many Martin will be glad to hear, he’s going to soon start charging me for server rental.
Yesterday day was a trip to a museum. Lots of oldie worldie houses & building but strangely the only pic I took was this sweeeeeeeet horse pulling this diddy tram. He was really going for it and we got the impression quite enjoyed charging up the slight hill.

Then bus back to the JR station (free as a JR bus ) and off at the Sapporo Beer Museum.

The museum, well the free bit, is a bit meeeeh but taster beers (not free) were nice.

Then the executive decision was made to go for the Ghengis Khan all you can eat Mongolian BBQ with all you can eat drinks (beer & soft). It was our first time so luckily there were instructions & watched other peeps.

It was certainly messy!! It was only 2/3 way through that SWMBO realised near the grill wasn’t the best place to put her sunglasses, as in above pic.

Then back to the hotel on the bus spied my first D4 in Japan. Chap must have thought he was being stalked.

Today was a bit of a long & slow train ride from Sapporo to Kushiro. Not much to see at Chitose AB apart from one of the Japanese Air Force Ones, well before it’s sent to the scrapper. These have just been replaced by 777s.

And cows, well lack of them. Everywhere in Hokkaido the bang on about the super creamy, super healthy, super everything Hokkaido milk. It’s image is cute black & white cows in green fields roaming free. Like what’s on the train.

Sadly we only saw a few in tiny fields, plus lots & lots in giant barns that don’t look like they will ever see anything green. Most disillusioned.

I think Japanese pastries must be on a par with the best of French ones...
Especially those 'discovered' in the little coffee shops and patisseries near the larger train stations.

What I thought. It certainly got a good wash today as it’s been peeweeing down all day. The fumarole fields we were going to would have resulted in us getting soaked so we took the train there & next train back. Saw loads of cranes & deer so a worthwhile trip. Will bing up some pics in a bit, struggling with t’internet here plus it’s scoff time, all c/o the local Lawsons convenience store.

Were the cranes in displays or wild? We saw them recently but learnt that the 'display' ones are not released to go back to Siberia (?) by clipping their wings (but don't quote me).
And a great thing about Lawsons and the other convenience stores, they stocked beer and wines that were very reasonably priced. If you know your sake, there were also some great ones to sample and some dreadful ones.
We also visited a great whisky manufacturing site at Otaru on the other side of Hokkaido.LeighW

Pretty sure wild, they were in the nature reserve just north of Kushiro. Plus there were groups of them in fields. We probably saw about a dozen today, plus a group of 4 yesterday on the way here. Rubbish pic, iPhone at max zoom, too rainy to take pics of the others.

And yes, vino at Lawsons is pretty cheap and we’ve not had a bad bottle yet. Hic.
Will be in Otaru in about a week’s time, will have a look at the whisky (or is it whiskey, can never remember) place.

Pastries were very nice, very nice indeed. It’s an early train tomorrow so will stock up for enjoying en-route.
We didn’t try the okonimiyaki, we were just in Hiroshima one night before flying back to UK for a week. We’ll be back there as really liked the place but not on this trip.

The whisky place is west of the main township ( https://www.nikka.com/eng/ ) is I believe is the only whisky manufacturer in Japan to make it in the traditional style (not all the Scottish or Irish use the traditional methods) but it was reasonably expensive from the shop at the factory. Still a fascinating morning wander through all the buildings see the processes involved.
"The Scots spell it whisky and the Irish spell it whiskey, with an extra 'e'. This difference in the spelling comes from the translations of the word from the Scottish and Irish Gaelic forms. Whiskey with the extra 'e' is also used when referring to American whiskies." stolen directly from Google search...
I too searched for Discoveries throughout Japan (since 2006 after I bought mine) and have seen them in Tokyo x4, Takayama x1, and single sightings in a another couple of cities. Oh, yes, one sighting of a D4 in Nagasaki on the way up to the Russian Orthodox church.) Only managed to get photos of three and they were all D3s.
I am really envious of your journey through Japan LeighW
