Bit of an update for yesterday & today. Yesterday it was peeweeing down all day so it was a bit miserable sitting in trains hoping that when we got to where we were going it would all clear up. Unfortunately no-one told the rain. S’pose only the third rain soaked day in over 5 months isn’t too bad.

We took this scenic special train up the single track line, going slowly to spot wildlife. It had windows that dropped right down, needless to say they stayed up and the sleeve of my fleece did much demisting.

And yes, those seats were as uncomfortable as they looked. Big Cry

Saw one crane, a handful of deer and lots of rain. Big Cry

Luckily there was a cut-out crane in the train to show what most peeps had missed.

Once back to Kushiro we thought we might head back up the line to Kawayuonsen to see if the rain would abate and we could go and see some fumarole fields, sadly it didn’t. This is what we were trying to see. There was a bus to it but we would have been soaked wandering around.

All we saw was rain.

On the way there & back we saw well over a dozen cranes & loads of deer so not a total washout. We’re the weather hot & we needed rehydrated instead of drying out, we could have bought some sweat from a machine. Very weird.

We might try and get to the Hells in a few days as we have a couple of options for getting back to Sapporo.

Today dawned beautifully, what a difference 24hrs makes. Thumbs Up

We took the single carriage train to Nemuro, about as far E as is possible to go in Japan. Nice but long ride out to Nemuro, fair bit of wildlife incl cranes, deer and 2 x white tailed eagles. Sadly SWMBO missed the eagled. Sad

Lots of cute little stations on the line, the train operates like a bus so driver does everything from tickets to honking the horn to clear the dear off the tracks.

A few characters to liven the places up.

This one is the most easterly station in Japan do a Mecca for train fans.

We resisted the temptation as the bus to the cape was timed to leave just after the train got into Nemuro.

Then to Cape Nossapu, the most E part of Japan with its rather cute lighthouse. And frogs. No idea what that’s about as this is not a part of Japan that thinks they will see any non-Japanese tourists so no explanations. The train to & from Nemuro was the first train we’d been on that only did announcements in Japanese.

Looks like some great surfing here but not a single wetsuit anywhere!

Russia in the background, well the disputed islands that Japan lost at the end of WW2.

And an eternal flame. Well fanned by the wind as it was freezing and blowing a hoolie.

Then back to the hotel, didn’t see much on the way back and it was raining. Still a nice sunset from the room. Packing up the now as on early train to Asahikawa in the centre of Hokkaido before heading to the very top of Japan.

For a sports drink, pocari sweat tastes pretty good. It’s a Japanese thing but seems to be available in other Asian countries, too. You should also be able to get it in powder form if one wants to make it at home. Thumbs Up

I think I’ll give it a miss, the name puts me off big time. Whistle Whistle

By way of a PS, I also managed to leave my long suffering and well adventured Foxy’s baseball cap on the bus. I ran back to get it but it was gone. RIP faithful headwear. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

No, she’s sure. It was pretty clean after it’s last washed so up to standard. It’s just amazing I didn’t loose it months ago, I have a habit of leaving it lying around. Sad

Hi Del, I understand NW Japan had a fairly big earthquake. Haven’t heard any reports of damage yet so hope all is well with you guys.

I did hear train services were disrupted though!

The joys of living in Japan (or New Zealand for that matter!)
 King of the typo.

All fine here, thanks for the heads up as all the news is in Japanese. Didn’t experience anything apart from SWMBO’s gentle snoring.

I might not survive saying that though. Laughing Laughing

She did say something about a moderately high mag quake yesterday in China. Will have a check to see if anything here as it’s a morning in a train.

Proof still here, pic of view from breakie.

PS Yes there was one, off Japan’s NW coast with tsunami advisory. 6.4on Richt scale & 12km down so fairly sizeable. Will have a look at USGS. Thumbs Up

Here ya go. We’re well north of that in Asahikawa. Thanks for the concern, and from SWMBO.

Just been enjoying eating scrambled eggs with chopsticks, it really helps mixing the noodles in. Thumbs Up

Great view from room toward Cape Soya, where we’re off to now on a 4hr 15min tour that wasn’t much more than the local bus there & back. Thumbs Up
