Strange ticking noise? Audio link included

D3, 2007 TDV6.

Started the engine and heard this strange ticking noise. Engine response is normal but the sound has me worried so I've parked it for the time being.

(Uploaded audio) http://vocaroo.com/i/s0uTd50PyS56

Any ideas on what might be causing it?

Does it stop when you turn off the ICE? Does it only happen when the AUX input is selected? I leave my iPhone cradle plugged into AUX and I get a similar noise from the speakers when there's no phone in the cradle. Connect the phone or turn off the amp and it goes away for me.

Is the oil at correct level?

Oil filter well in place?

Sounds diferent from right to left bank of cylinders?

Does the sound changes if warm engine?

Any obvious leak?

My cam belt that was recently done was starting to shred - initially when diagnosing the noise I thought it only did it when warm but it was there all a time, quiet at first and gradually got louder over 10 days

I started diagnosing by running it with the fan belt removed

Oil and filter change (LR filter)

I removed the insides of my EGR valves

Ran injector cleaner through it

Disconnected injectors one by one (DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING)

Done the above and the noise was still there, so then decided I will have to dig deeper and that's when I found the shredded belt that was hitting the plastic cover 😃

It might be something different on yours but worth checking just in case 👍

Did the cam belt sound like the audio clip that is posted by karlth?

On tick over it wasn't as loud as the noise on the audio file, but when I revved it up and held the revs at 2500 rpm it sounded similar. I was starting to think that it was a cam follower or small end, as the noise was coming from the top right hand bank of cylinders

When I found the fault it then made sense as the split in the cam belt would have had further to travel around the cam and idlers pulleys, so the noise/click wasn't as often as what a cam follower or small end would have been - hope that makes sense

I don't know why but the shredded cam belt was only hitting the cam cover on the top right hand side

It was the "Cylinder 6" problem.

Total engine rebuild needed. Sad
