HA Chaos

Travelling into work this morning, traffic jam on the motorway...

the cause, a broken down minibus that had failed to make it completely onto teh hard shoulder so was half blocking lane one. HA was in attendance with lots of pretty lights on his Shogun but just standing next to his car. Do they not have tow ropes or something. Surely a Shogun could drag a dead minibus 20 feet to take it completely off the carriageway????? Rolling Eyes

I don't think they are allowed to.

In fact I'm pretty sure that they aren't allowed to even help you change a wheel.

Traffic management is their game. Rolling Eyes

Maybe they are not allowed too ?

Like community cops are not allowed to intervene when they see a crime taking place Thud

you are probably right but surely removing the obstruction (it wasn't an accident) would be traffic management?

They can move vehicles.. Rolling Eyes The first vehicle on scene has a responsibility to make the lane safe until a second crew can pull the vehicle off the carriageway. They are not allowed to do this with one vehicle in attendance as there would be flowing traffic in the lane with nothing to warn against the rear of the obstruction. Wink

Don't they need a third crew to do the Risk Assessment and a fourth crew (Safety Officers) to check the spelling on the RA prior to letting the first and second crews do the job........ Rolling Eyes

can't they put their cones out to "shield" the area and signs and then move the vehicle?

Even a sperate flashing light thingy on its own stand as I can see the isue of the HA vehicle then being hidden behind the failed minibus.

....or as VA says, appeal to passing LR's to help Whistle

Try asking the 5 dead and 12 seriously injured, 116 injured motorway and dual carriageway network workers who were involved in 200 traffic management related accidents involving last year whether it's wise to be safe or not ? Wink

If most drivers were half awake it might help Whistle

like the fully laden French artic bogged down that I passed this morning who wanted me to pull him out. Some things are just too heavy, might have attempted it with a couple of pulley blocks and a winch though.... The End

I agree there DG, just today I gained the impression they weren't really helping themselves either....if someone had gone into the HA vehicle, they would have taken out the minibus people and the HA staff as they were all standing between the two vehicles........

Obviously can't comment on what you saw Spotter Wink ...I can see why they are getting a bad name ..closing m-ways, apparently standing around and perfectly executed cone formations etc ..and we all think we could do a better job of it but there has to be some rules and role guidance even if sometimes it don't make much sense to the casual observer Wink

They should use push bars as per the Australian police. They use cruisers with specially designed push bars, which seem to work without damaging the car being pushed.
