Every camera enforcement unit is 'self funding' ie the 'income' from fines covers the staff salary, pension, vans, postage of the letters etc etc - and any excess goes straight to the OPCC ( note that, its not the same as police force concerned ) - plus that ecess cash cannot be used to fund more cameras or pay for more enforcement - thats against the Bill of Rights from 1668 - but can be used to fund other crime initatives ( like the 'lives not knives' programme in schools at the moment). For every £100 the OPCC/police get about £22.

I wish car manufacturers were made to calibrate speedometers accurately. Every car I drive that has a modern electronic speedo over reads by about 10%. My D4 at 30 gps speed, reads 33. 70 it reads 75.

I prefer a speedo that over-reads than one that under-reads. If it says 70 when I'm doing actually 65 then I'm less likely to get a ticket.
And can you imagine LR calibrating speedos? We'd all have a calibrated speedo and each would give a different speed! Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I thought they were much more accurate now that they (I assume) use the ABS sensors to measure wheel rotations, rather than a bit of springy wire in a pipe from the gearbox.
When I changed wheels/tyres on a SAAB I used to drive, I went to a main dealer to change the number of ABS pulses per wheel revolution so that the speedo remained accurate.
Every car with GPS has an astonishingly accurate time reference, even if GPS speed isn't always very accurate - poor signals, less accurate when travelling up/down inclines and a lag in the indication changing.

None of which are able to take tyre wear into account, hence the difference in displayed speed. You could buy an IID and calibrate your speedo every few (thousands of) miles, but I tend to just rely on my Tomtom as a GPS signal isn't affected by wear and tear etc.
Must admit though, I never thought of the issue of travelling up/down hill. I wonder if the Tomtom takes altitude into account when doing its sums?'

I live off j29a of the M1 and have to travel through 5 junctions worth of these cameras to Sheffield every day. They have took some getting used too and you have to be totally on it, when the speed limit signs are off its open season but as soon as they are on traffic jams on the brakes creating some dicey moments. Also have to be careful when they are still lit but with the national speed limit sign as people assume thats green for go but you will get caught at over 70mph. Setting cruise is dangerous too as they flick between 40,50 and 60 a lot. The info screens normally have something like "smart motorway, speed limit for air quality".MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I have to admit that since these cameras have appeared on the motorways around Manchester I have cut my speed a little. I have never been a fast driver especially as i mostly have customers in but nevertheless I am a little more cautious nowadays.The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
