What's this hanging from under my D3?
Sods law, I'm away with work, and my other half is calling me off the hook! Something is hanging off the car and scraping along the ground!
She's sent me photos, but I'm not all that familiar with the underside (I've spent enough bloody time under there though).
Does anyone know what this is, and what she can can do (I'm not back until Friday) to either remove it or re-attach it? My guess is that it looks like a heat shield alongside the exhaust or something? Possibly held on like other things using clips or something.
Any help greatly appreciated, AA cover is I think only HomeStart, not HomeThereIsSomethingHangingOffUnderMyCar!

Yep looks very much like a heat shield and by the looks of it the mounts have rusted through. Tell her to just rip it off or try and get someone to push it back up use some tie wraps to hold it as will need replacing.2006 TdV6 HSE.

It's one of the heat shields. The aluminium corrodes away around the fixings, and then they get loose. If it'll pull off, pull it off until you can get it fixed. Richard

That's sort of what I was going to suggest. What are the changes pulling it off will damage it though? Something is clearly just about holding it on, is it a screw or a bolt or just plastic clips?

Looks like this. You’ll note the aluminum has sheared off around the washer. I replaced one with an even larger washer to keep it “temporarily” in place (not shown)
Depending on heat shield, each is fastened in 3-5 locations similarly.

That pic is a great help thanks. Will probably give her the confidence that it's no big deal and that either she can deal with it or maybe she'll just pop in to a local garage and ask them to pull it off and chuck it in the boot until I get home.

I wouldn’t go blindly and pull any of those off but removal is not terribly difficult as long as the nuts are in ok shape. Apply some WD40 (or another rust loosener) and let it work it’s magic for a little while, then “lefty loosey” and you’re done. 8)

Or leave it as is. If I've got the direction right it won't be a problem until the car is in reverse.

Thanks guys, she won't drive it like that, and she won't go under it with tools, so either the car doesn't move and the whole family stays at home for the next three days or it just comes off tonight in whatever state, is what I've been told yay!
Again thanks for all the help guys

Is the car ar home? Might be worth a call to the AA, the car is effectively immobilised. They can only say no.

It is at home, it's worth a shot heh? I'll suggest it, not in the good books though because obviously it's my fault that I'm not there when this has happened 8-0
