What happens when you overfill the engine

You overfill the engine with appr. 1.5-2L engine oil and then try to do an emissions test for MOT?

Where will the excess oil want to go?

I’d not want to run the engine with oil past the “full” mark on the dipstick, it’s there for a reason. I believe that it can cause oil seals to fail amongst other issues. Syphon the excess out of the dipstick tube. Thumbs Up

That's what I would do. But...

The car was in the shop for a MOT. In their wisdom they misread the dipstick and added 1.5L minimum of engine oil.
And then tried to perform an emission test.

I know what happened after that but what do all of you think that could happen? The shop claims that what happened has nothing to do with overfilling the engine.

it needs syphoning out.

don't think 2l would be enough to damage the engine in the short term but it will cause pressure at higher levels and in unexpected places IMHO, so seals will certainly not benefit from it.

My concern would be that the excess oil is burnt and the engine might continue to run on oil even when switched off. In which case the only way of stopping it is to stall the engine.

I hope this didn't happen to you.

I've done it a few times, but usually needs pretty aggressive off-roading. Basically find a suitable hill with not a lot of grip & head up. Once you start sliding back and the wheels are still going forward the car stalls out as she's confused and/or thinks the driver is an idiot. Thumbs Up

that's kind of what I thought ... not exactly easy to do if you've picked car up from a garage and your engine starts running away due to burning oil with the diesel.

What happened...

During warming the car up for the test the car dumped it's oil.
They drove back to the shop without almost no oil left.

Front oil seal at oil pump was pushed out (replaced 8500Km ago with belt change & new pump)

But also I now have 3mm play on the crankshaft axial bearing and because of that a rattling engine.

Insurance expert claims this is all normal for an engine it's age. That the engine was 100% OK before the test and the fact that 1.5L of oil was added is not a factor.

Sorry but running an engine with too much oil can be worse than running it with too little as it will often lead to blown oil seals, as reported. We rent out boats with diesel engines and every weekend, without fail, have to suck out the surplius oil which some punter thought they would add 'just in case'.

Who appointed the insurance expert - you, the garage or your insurance company? Either way I'd be looking for an independent assessment if your engine with a view to making a claim against the garage. There is a clear line of 'cause and effect' in that they overfilled and the oil seal failed, following which the engine continued to be run.

Thanks all.

That the oil seal get pushed out is imo pure logic, the oil has to go somewhere and this is the way of the least resistance. Can go in the front or the back.

But the bearing, could that be caused by running without oil?

+1 for waterbuoys notion you should get your own assessment done. Everyone else is trying to avoid paying out on what looks to be the garage being utter Censoreds
 .

We get quite a few drivers at work who just put in a couple of litres to be sure, sadly the truck sees to much oil and flashes up a warning, draining out the oil means new sump plug at 40 quid a time.
