Head unit won't come on, low battery warning the day after

Good morning,

Yesterday I was driving on the motorway with the rear screens on and suddenly the head unit in the front simply turned off. Won't come back on. No radio, no reverse camera. Everything else electric works. I thought I would check today the fuse or maybe do a hard reset on the battery.

This morning I had to go fetch breakfast and as soon as I started the car it gave a message "warning low battery please start engine". Now, the battery is less than 2 years old and I did more than 500 km yesterday so I don't see how it can be drained already? I didn't leave any light on in the car.

I will look first at the fuses, than do a hard reset on the battery. In the meantime has anybody experienced something similar?

Head unit fault is keeping the canbus awake so the vehicle is not in 'sleep' mode, hence the battery drain.

Thank you. What shall I do to stop the drain?

Hopefully it's fixed now.

I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes and connect it back again. No battery warning and the radio display was back on.

I didn't start it but I will take it for a spin maybe tomorrow to charge the battery back.

Hopefully won't come back.

You need to charge the battery with a battery charger. Practically speaking the alternator is only good for topping-up the battery. Unless you are planning for a 10 hour drive.

I just found out about the CTEK comfort indicator which plugs in permanently on your battery and there is an outlet for a CTEK charger to be plugged directly when the indicator shows that the battery is low. Anybody used that one? I never have issue with the battery so far.

I've not used the Comfort Indicator - my understanding is that it still needs positioning somewhere where you can see and check it, which can be a pain.
Pretty sure there's a thread here showing some interesting solutions for that!
I opted for the cheaper solution - a cheap eBay voltage gauge that plugs into one of the power points in the car.
If I notice the voltage getting a little low, especially if I've only done short trips, then I hook up the CTEK charger to give the battery a little boost whilst parked up.
I use the towing socket adaptor that is sold via the shop on this site.

Cheers

Other charger conditioners are available. CTEK is not the only capable unit, and Optimate are widely used by the motorcycle fraternity. I have four units from them and use one on the D4 occasionally thro' the tow socket.
