worth a go at fixing the mechanism ? dealer may say non-fixable but … we all know about dealer-speak not always being 100% accurate.

Its a sealed unit. I'm not sure putting it in the oven works with D4 headlamps.

No doubt it would be possible with the correct equipment and knowledge. However, I have neither.

When I have replaced the unit and cured the problem I might chuck it in the oven and see if I can get it apart.

From what I can see through the bulb aperture is a gimbal arrangement with the hid lamp fixed to it. This has motors gears and wires.

All wires visible seem to head into an alloy finned box at the bottom of the lamp.

There was some brass and other dust inside the unit which might indicate a physical problem with the gimbal or it’s drive system.

Gareth, If it was me, I'd need cast iron proof of the fault before I replaced such an expensive item. The reason for this is, I have my doubts about the main dealers diagnosis. Shocked

Again, if it was me, I'd take the car to Landranger and ask for their opinion, that won't cost anything. Those boys are very knowledgeable on all things Land Rover and I'd put their opinion higher up the credibility scale than I would a main dealer whose response would be to continually replace parts until you hit on the problem solver.

At the very minimum, I'd swap the two headlights over to see if the issue shifted sides. Wink

or swap with someone-else's headlight for a few days and see if the issue stays with the car or the unit.

... and if someone is willing to let me try one of their headlamps then I would be eternally grateful, and would buy the beers and curry 🍛😎

I just tried swapping the headlamps over. The fault code moves with the headlamp.

Original fault is :

HCM-Headlamp

B1D65-87 (AF) Motor operation malfunction of right actuator - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message
( on 03-05-2018 10:26:08 at 148847 km )

When swapped, cleared fault, checked again it becomes:

HCM-Headlamp

B1D64-87 (AF) Motor operation malfunction of left actuator - Bus signal/message failure - missing a message
( on 03-05-2018 10:23:43 at 148847 km )

So in my mind this exonerates any fault with the wiring or cjb.

Going to try and dismantle the lamp. Nothing to lose!

Nothing to loose, as long as it doesn’t put your car off the road through no light that side. Thumbs Up

What about looking for a cheap non adaptive that side, just “to do” until you join DG, change to a D5 and have every young child you drive past burst into tears. Whistle
