Autoglym do a kit with compound, drill adapter and pads

Works well, just keep the headlight sprayed, veeyveasy to get too hot and damage the plastic Thumbs Up

Hi,

What we do in our workshop in these cases:
Cut is back/ sanding it down with emmerypaper (depending on how deep the scratches or dullness is, you start with a certain roughness) ending with 2000, then polish it with car paint polish but brass polish will also do a very good job.
Then the important part. Spray paint them with 2K clear spray paint from a major A+ brand....
So not a 1k pray can, but a professional 2k brand (which they do sell sometimes in 2k spray cans.. for diy use, we do buy those in such cases in Germany)

It will last this way for another 10 years...at least... (if proper done)
No yellowness, no dullness, etc.

Edit; added photo from our Saab, with on the left side of the car (right on picture) a spray painted headlight unit, the other one is before the spray painting...
 Best regards
Harold

Many thks as always

Haven’t heard autoglym in a while , apart from the old chrome polish paste

Also didn’t realise there was a clear spray , I wonder if the hycote clear lacquer is any good, only because I have a few cans left over for when I resprayed my scuttle panel

Great tip ref keeping the headlight cool, have a small 2 inch pad that I can use in my Dremel so can keep it at a low speed

May I also ask is there a lot of difference between the standard halogen and xenon headlights please in light quality output

Most appreciated for the help

Bow down Thumbs Up

I did mine the same as harold.

Rubbed down with wet and dry paper, polished (used Meguires scratch X v2 which is prob the same stuff that is in their recent kits!) then lacquered. 3+ years ago

If you have the time, it's a good way to go, when warmer.

Probably works out cheaper than the kits!

Unlikely to go wrong with meguires though

Plus the autoglym

Do have some wet and dry , will have to see what grit it is, is something like 2,000 suitable plse

Will bring them in doors to make life easier Thumbs Up

Please do not forget, that 1k lacquer does probably not last very long here...
It will turn yellow in a few years... especially the cheaper stuff used in these kits...

2k clear is also used on our (older) disco’s upon the metallic base colour.... you know for sure that that does not become yellow ish..

Is the yellowing due to UV radiation?

I think you will find with all the polishing kits the results are not long term.

Quite a few of the car pages/forums make mention of what Motolab says above.

We use this 2K spraycan system our workshop for small jobs...

https://www.lackshop24.de/lackspray/spraym...html

But watch out, this “system” spraymax is used by a variety of sellers who fill them with al sorts of different brands of paint in them. In The Netherlands, we can only get them with “B” branded paint... that is the very reason we buy them in Germany, this firm does sell it with the high quality professional brand GLASURIT...

I have no connection to this firm or whatsoever, but we tried a few brands In the past, since we can not afford us to make mistakes to much and doing the same jobs twice, we know what to buy Very Happy

For bigger jobs it is easier to buy 500ml or 1L for spray gun use more locally as professional paint shops are in every city, but 2K spray cans with A brands are not so readily available

Many thks and funny enough just found this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spray-Max-Primer-...YXDT0Z6CHA

Indeed would rather get the decent quality items so it at least lasts a while

I’ll also check out GLASURIT

Many thks and as a side note ref the xenon didn’t realise there’s like a shutter inside and by the sounds of it provides a better quality light

Thks as always and most appreciated Bow down

Ah ok, but you don’t need primer, if proper cleaned (at least i do not use it). so I suggest to buy the 400ml can for 2 headlights and if you buy direct on the site I linked to... €13,50 is less than 12 GBP.. Wink
