So do you have to remove the headlamp unit to get at the lever or can it be done 'in situ' ?

Depends how small your hands are.
Note that if you can't get your mitts in there, the metal locking levers can prove tricky to lift and need care not to scratch/damage the metalwork.

What happens if I don't change them. I should arrive at destination before nightfall and in the worst case I just dazzle a few johnny foreigners, right?

Living in Kent it happens to me all the time as I never see foreign motors over here with any sort of shields fitted to their headlights.

Well funny that you should say that! I tried to switch my headlights for driving over there when the car first arrived. The thread shows that some people do change their lights. I felt that I would not bother after skinning my knuckles several times. Now when they flash me I just flash back and full beams on xenons look just fabulous, and they soon stop pestering. Hopefully no Gendarme will catch me. Laughing
