Heated Windscreen
Hello
Wonder if anyone could tell me if the following is expected.
Fully frozen windscreen. Temperature is about -1 degrees.
I put the heated windscreen on, and the fan on max. (engine cold), and it takes a lot longer than the rear to start defrosting the screen.
When it does finally get going (and while is does clear instantaneously), only the drivers side is clear. Passenger side is still frozen.
Whole process to defrost just the drivers side has take around 10 mins. I do not recall it taking that long in the D3 previously.
I tested the park heating system the other day, and that was fantastic, and cleared the ice in less that 15 mins, although no smoke!! Is that because I have a '62 plate D4? The old D3 made an amazing amount of smoke.
Just wondering if I need to take it down to Land Rover to get the heated screen checked out? I have no idea if the screen has ever been replaced.
TIA

I believe there are two fuses for the front screen heating. Maybe one has blownRichard

Thanks. Will investigate.
Are they usually so slow to take effect though?

I'm finding similar problems.
Minus 6 this morning. Both heated screen dash lights on but the front refuses to fire up.
I have a cheap volt meter in one of the cigar lighter outlets and sometimes it shows a severe drop on switching on the front screen, sometimes not so that's not a blown fuse, more like load shedding.
Reasonably new battery and she starts just fine so that's probably not the problem.
Anything to check?Stew,

It's not fuses. It needs fixing, so a warranty job.

Ok. So not a warranty job. Tiniest of stone chip, and I mean the tiniest chip, has caused one side of the windscreen heated element to fail.
Does that sound feasible or complete bovine excrement?
If it is possible to cause a failure, that seems to me like a bit of a design flaw.
Every car I have ever had has had a stone chip in the windscreen so it's not as if it is an unusual occurrence.
To design something so fragile and so susceptible to damage doesn't seem likely in a car like this.

Most unlikely it's a stone chip, a chip may cause one vertical micro wire to fail but not one side, more like a poor connection, check the actual connections on the screen.
Is the screen a genuine LR/Pilkington?- if not this could be the cause of one side failing and slow defrosting It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
I've found over the years non OEM replacement screens tend not to last much more than 6-12months before one or both sides fail, hence only accept OEM screens even if I have to pay a small excess. But fortunately with LR Insurance there's no excess for OEM glass
These screens require a heavy current, hence being split into two circuits and require the engine on to work. As a result they tend to work better and faster if you bring the revs up a little to get the alternator to work a little harder rather than just leaving the engine tick over. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

As per MrH - mine will defrost in about 2 mins max - but only if I increase revs slightly (I mean by a couple of hundred, not revving the nadges of it)
