Heavy Steering
Hello All - please be gentle, I am a numptie
We have a 2010 D4 which has done about 112k - we love it as a family workhorse and caravan tug but as it's not the cheapest car to run and repair we have an i10 for day to day stuff.
Last time we took Disco out, noticed the steering was a bit heavier than normal, not horrendous but just a bit heavy - as if tyres were a bit flat. Yes I did check
As it was in for service Monday I asked them to check, they "suspect" that the pump is failing - lazy in there words. Quoted £800 fitted for replacement, however they said it isn't essential but steering will be VERY heavy if it goes.
This is a local family garage (actually a Volvo specialist) who I trust
In normal circumstances, I'd leave it, as car isn't used all the time. However we are off to Alps in a few weeks and I don't really fancy no PAS on mountain roads when fully laden!
Would appreciate:
Anything I can easily do - I've read on here about WD40 Universal Joint? But would need Janet and John level instructions!
Reasoned views on risk it or replace it
Thanks in advance

What brand and what tyre pressure?- they need to be 3-4 psi above recommendations 35-36psi, pressure can make a big difference. Is the pump noisy when turning? - this is a sign the pump is failing, which is rare.
For instructions on how to lubricate the lower steering column UJ do search. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

UJ
As above ^, Steering UJ. Try a good spray of WD or other, and work the steering to see if it loosens. This is a known problem that others have had.
Tyre pressures also need to be checked.
Pump causing this is unlikely as they tend to squeal and show a fault in other ways.2011 MY D4 HSE

Thanks All
Definitely no noise from PAS, so could just be UJ etc
I'll try WD40 later, but is back in Monday as needs new wheel bearing, so I will ask them to give it all a good lube as well.

I would certainly look to the UJ in the column. I have had two seize and both times it resulted in stiff to turn steering.

Glad it’s fixed. If you’d lost PAS the steering goes from normal to “loosening a wheel bolt” heavy. Had this happen in a D4 while going round a motorway roundabout at speed and it was a good job I had both hands on the wheel!

This has happened to our 2010 D4. Our friendly mechanic lubricated it and it was the lightest it had ever been.. for about a hundred miles Looks like it's going to need the replacement joint.

Any recommendations on how often the UJ needs lubricated? And is it accessible enough to do without it being on ramp?

It’s even more exciting when it suddenly comes back It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
