Help! 2008 Disco 3 TDV6 with a potential problem!

Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster so go easy on me! (If this is in the wrong place - sorry!)

I have a 2008 Disco 3 2.7 TDV6 around 124k - and I think i'm at the start of an issue - which could be expensive. So after some advice.

Engine has started making a bit of a funny noise, I've knocked up a quick video on youtube for anyone to listen to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuNC1z70Vg4

Hope the noise can be heard in the video? its not a ticking - more a rumble in time with the crank, which can be heard clearer around 1500 rpm.

I had initially thought (hoped) it was a drive/aux tensioner, which as it happens was on the way out when I took it off. But when replaced that didn't cure the noise, have also run it without and aux belt - and same noise.

So now i'm thinking - bearings Sad and just wondered what anyone else thinks?

How was the one way clutch on the alternator? They can sometimes make a lot of front end noise if they are seized. Makes the belt tensioner work extra hard.

Yea it felt OK - smooth, as did all the other aux items off the belt (apart from the tensioner itself - the bearings were on their way out).

The alternator was changed a year or so ago.

Took the sump off - Looks like I'm at the start of a bearing issue!

Yea, I'm being a bit optimistic there really Laughing we'll see what the damage is.

Going to attempt engine out with the body on. Trawling through the forum to see what/how others have done it!

That's great, thanks Thumbs Up

Lots more reading to do I think.

I've already made a start on some of the easy stuff at the front.

Coolent drained, viscous fan and plastic shroud, airbox, intercooler hoses, wheel arch liners, aux belt, battery and aux battery box and alternator all out.

Now need it to stop raining!

Start of taking Engine out with body on - here we go!

Progress so far:-
    - Radiator pack is out, power steering and aircon disconnected. (N/S bolt on the rad pack was a right pain!)
    - Took all the coolant hoses out the way so I can see what i'm doing.
    - starter motor out
    - torque converter disconnected from flywheel
    - engine wiring disconnected.
    - Front bumper off, Headlights out, Grill, arch covers.
    - Front cross member / bracket removed, but still with wiring loom attached - there doesn't seem to be one wiring plug to easily disconnect to just take this off - and i didn't want to unpick all wiring so i'm just moving it to one side when i need the access. Also has the benefit that i can just put it back in place and shut the bonnet when I'm done for the day!
    - Exhaust disconnected from turbo.
    - Exhaust front section disconnected from rear section so i can move it to one side.(still in place - can't get it out yet until i've dropped the gearbox/cross member)

Now working on the front prop shaft (need to remove for access by the looks of it) - got all the bolts out, front part compresses fine, rear connection will not budge, attacked with chisel - no good, now sprayed with gt85 and wd40 to soak so will give that another bash!
Next on the list (after the dam propshaft!)
    - crossover pipe mounting brackets
    - turbo brackets
    - gearbox bolts
    - disconnect fuel lines
    - remove some bits on the top of the engine that may get in the way of the hoist (EGR pipes, fuel rail etc..)
    - finish taking off n/s upper suspension arm - for access to engine mount - but also because I need the drive shaft out to replace a CV boot
A couple of questions.

Looks like some people are dropping the gearbox/cross member to get better access to the top bolts on the gearbox- anyone else done this?

Will the gearbox need support nearer the front when the engine is removed/being removed ? (not on the plastic filter tray - obviously )

Any one else got any advice (not take the body off! Laughing ), i've seen something about gearbox breathers, and wiring that may be wrapped around the crossover pipe?

Looking at my pictures below - would you say I need a new intercooler? that side of the engine behind the intercooler is a mess - lots of oil all over the pas/aircon pumps, but the turbo (out) pipe is clean. Looking at receipts - it had a new turbo a few years ago, and I replaced o/s intercooler hose last year (split at the top) - should there be that much oil in the intercooler system? - or is it a kind of cause and effect? i.e. the hose was split in the first place meaning it was bringing oil from the turbo, when that was replaced maybe the intercooler failed next?

Looking at my own picture, I don't know if that is historic oil or not, it also had a new aircon rad at the same time as the turbo, and look how clean the air-con rad is? unless there is plastic shielding it from the dirt that is everywhere else?

The gearbox breather runs on top of the g/box and behind the crossover pipe, It is held via a bracket behind the drivers side cyl head, next to the vacuum pump.

There is box box section which houses the gear selector beneath the centre console and is removable! If you remove the shifter and console you should be able to remove this too. This will dramatically increase your access to the upper gearbox bolts, and breather pipe bracket with socket extensions. Though I haven't done it this way, (it was easier to remove the body Laughing )

Have another look at what you believe to be oil leaking at the intercooler, it might be diesel from the fuel cooler!!

Use new bolts when replacing the drive shaft flange as these will not suffer re-torquing to LR specs. (ie they'll snap first!) You will need to support the g/box!

Best of luck Thumbs Up

Let's face it DSL, you're disappointed this isn't another "stripper" thread. Laughing
