The locking wheel nut is made in 2 parts. The outer part will and is designed to spin freely, this is to prevent thieves using a chisel on the nut to undo it. Obviously the outer part needs the grooves in it to match the inner 'real' part of the nut. If you don't push the adaptor key in far enough then turn it, all it will do is rotate the outer dummy part of the nut. If this happens you will have to realign the grooves in the outer dummy part with the grooves in the real nut before you will be able to push the adaptor nut in fully to undo the nut propper.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Make sense to me but I'm just off for another slice of cold left over Dominos, if anything didn't make sense it would delay me so everything makes sense so I'm off to the fridge for pizza!
Got my car back from the dealer all fixed. They have sent me through some photos of the nut which caused all the hassle in the first place - see attached. Although Blurred you can see where the outer section of the nut has been chiseled off to gain access to the inner section
or maybe not, how do you attach photos?Discovery 3 is truly a discovery to behold!

I had a problem with the locking wheelnuts when the LR garage doing the service damaged the locknut, and it had to be chiselled off. I bought a set of four normal wheelstuds and replaced all the locknuts, which are now in my garage. I never park in areas where I'd be concerned about someone running off with my wheels. Given the frequency with which I swap my wheels between on-road and off-road wheels/tyres I think it's better to stick with normal wheel studs.
I think the four studs were about £20-ish
