HELP! Handbrake preventing MOT test
Hey all, hopefully someone knows what the issue is.
Car is running fine, no problems (touch wood) took it for MOT on Sunday and they had to abort as when they carried out the handbrake test running vehicles on roller and applying the handbrake, the epb gives a tremendous squeal 5en locks up, errors etc. was a right game releasing it and clearing the codes. Drove it home, fine, tried testing to breaking point and fine. Took it for he retest this morning and the same again, as soon as they pulled the brake while rear wheels spinning it squeezed and locked up, any ideas? Fault codes below

Assume this is a 2 wheel roller? Back wheels only? I don't think you should test a D3 on a 2 wheel brake tester.
My MOT tester always uses a Tapley meter, out in the car park.Richard

Yep, 2 wheel roller, they are saying they’re putting the tester int “4x4 mode” to test. Have had the car tested at the same place since I got it and no issues.2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Never heard of '4x4' mode on two wheel tester
It's either rotating all four wheels of the car or not. The car doesn't know it's on a brake tester.Richard

Pass. I did just try to do the same test on the road, accelerate to 10pm and pull the epb on, same result, squeal and locked up so assuming there’s either an issue with the epb or Dennis is not supposed to do handbrake turns!2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

When my D3 and D4 are tested I dont let them do the rolling road test and ask them to use the old Ferodo brake testing meter they have, its always a palaver but they do use it and it then passes without issue.
Might be worth discussing with the tester as there isnt a 4x4 mode on a single axle rolling setup - they are perhaps telling you a porkyMust stop buying shiny toys....

So any idea if it’s an issue with how they’re testing (dropping on epb while car in motion) or is there an issue with my epb?2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Definitely not recommended to drop the EPB while the car is still moving!. As others have said ask them to use a brake testing meter..I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Applying the handbrake on the move surely triggers the emergency braking system, which - I thought - brakes all 4 wheels in ABS mode.
It's not quiet but it's not a screech..

4x4 mode allows the rollers of the axle being brake tested to run in opposite directions to avoid any issues with transmission lock up etc.

Great, just took it 50 yards down the road now can’t get the epb off. Stuck across three neighbours drives unable to move it. Epb release cable not working.2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

OOOOps that must be slightly embarrassing
Was once in the car at a LRE centre when the instructor showed us the EPB on the move operation, it was quite a shock to the guy in the back who hadn't clipped his seatbelt in on the D3 despite being told to do so, he had just pulled it across himself! never seen a full grown man fit into a footwell on a D3 before
From memory it should activate all braking but I'm guessing if the EPB is slightly an issue then it wont come off after it has been pulled.
DiscoMikey did a good guide to how to rebuild the unit from memory.Must stop buying shiny toys....

I was under the impression that the issue is though that you should only drive all 4 wheels together from the transmission using the vehicles own power and not have an external device drive the wheels, IE never tow the vehicle on ground for more than a very short distance and not drive wheels with the rolling road.Must stop buying shiny toys....

This has worked for me and others in the past - maybe worth a shot.
Engine off - car in "P" - foot brake held on.
Push and hold down EPB switch - keep holding down then ignition on - let it go through system check and start engine and only then release EPB switch.I see no ships........
