Hi, could you just fit a new switch from Maplins? Or would it screw up the cars electronics system?

Yep, went out this morning and the tailgate won't open, thankfully we have this forum or I would have scratched all my hair out.
Very disappointing, car is only 4 years old and has only done 22k miles.
Pressed both lock and unlock buttons at the same time and the tailgate popped open, I take it that as that bit works it must be something to do with the microswithch in the upper door, anyone have the answer, before I go out and order the wrong bit.

Ok, question, microswitch in top door, the one between the number plate lights,
or the actuator mechanism which is the subject of your post.

Microswitch in tailgate handle....

If it was the actuator, you wouldn't be able to open the tailgate with the buttons on the dash Thumbs Up

Couple of hours in the sunshine, took my time and dismantled the whole lot, cleaned and lubricated
everything I could find, even managed to Waxoil the inner door. Cost £0, all working
As it should. What is that white gunge, looks like limescale and just as hard.
Beer o'clock.

Can I just ask, is the part number for the actuator FUG500010, the cable you are talking about? I am thinking of changing as a matter of course, I have a dog box in my boot and if it failed I think it would be near impossible to get into.

Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve, fortunately I didn't have to do the actuator just the microswitch with it's
little hinged finger bar. I'm sure that if you trawl through some of the other posts
on this problem you'll find the part number. Alternatively, I'm sure your dealer will be
able to get you the right part. I'm sure you're right though, sitting in an empty
load space yesterday contemplating taking things apart wasn't my idea of fun.
Have a look on here, fantastic site with lots of very helpful and well informed people
willing to help.
Regards.
Wills.

Problematical tailgate

Guys- need some help here- bit of a mystery:

Top window in the tailgate opens only when it feels like it and is totally unpredictable. Might go for 2-3 days, I try it and it opens. I never expect it to open successfully- so i'm surprised when it does- though clearly this can't continue.

I've tried toggling / holding dashboard switches as outlined above. All I get is the sound that the doors appear to have unlocked- the 'click' from the rear that means that the microswitch 'must' (???) be working.

When I last managed to open the thing I checked the microswitch- and it appears to have been changed already as it looks in almost new condition- so I'm thinking it might not be the issue.

When the top window was opened the lower tailgate opens without issue in the usual way- so I'm thinking that the cable and connector etc are also ok otherwise the thing wouldn't release, would it? The mechanism etc has clearly been examined before as the membrane had been cut and replaced with duct tape.

Do you think that it could be the actual physical lock mechanism that just isn't moving far enough to disconnect the top window from its' locked position when the microswitch is activated?

Ideas and suggestions please?!!!

Sorry to hear of your problems. The only thing I can add is that the tailgate won't
open on its own, it needs to be physically lifted when you hear the latch disengage.
Intermittant faults are always the worst, I'd be tempted to look very carefully at the
microswitch and depending on price, replace it. It's always worth checking someone
else's work, especially the wiring and connections.
Good luck, sure you'll sort it.
Regards.
Wills.

From what you describe I would be tempted to strip out the actuator in the lower tailgate and make sure it is connected properly. You can also then check that it is a new style one (stainless steel crimped on to cable ) as opposed to the old style (some sort of alloy cast on) .

The end of the cable needs to be behind the retaining clip to ensure that it does not come loose. It also prevents any play in the mechanism, which may cause the systome you are seeing.
You can also make sure everything is bolted tight , which may be another cause of what you are seeing.

I would also suggest that if you dont have a new style cable...get one ! as it is only a matter of time !!! Thumbs Up
 Cheers Ian

Can't get in my boot

Really struggling to open my boot as well, when I try to open it on the button on the door I can hear the actuator working but the still will not open. I've tried the lock/unlock buttons on the dash, still the actuator makes a sound but still won't release, after reading some other posts about this problem, I've just tried hitting above number plate while trying to open boot, Has anybody had the same problem,

Mine would release on the lock/unlock button trick, but a friend's boot would not.
The way we got it to open was one of us to stand at the boot, and as soon as you heard the actuator respond to the buttons, quickly open the tailgate using the handle and give it a sharp pull upwards.....2-man job,but worked for us...worth a try Thumbs Up
