Help I havePatrol in my TDV6 Disco, how to empty the tank? |
|
Hi,
Please help, by misstake we have filled up my TDV6 Disco 3 with Patrol, 90 liters... After 500m we realized when the motor didn't have any power anymore.
First we tryed to hose out the fuel through the tank-opening but that didn't work (it seems the tank is protected against fuel thieves).
Secondly we tryed to pump out the fuel through the opening of the fuel filter but this is taking ages and is also giving electrical fault errors)...
So what can we do next?
Have somebody else had this problem? How did you fix it?
Many thanks in advance, we appreciate a urgent suggestion as we are in the middle of nowhere in Sweden and still need to go 1200km today...
Thanks,
Joan

Update, we have "short-circuit" the relais R8 for the fuelpump (with a fuse inbetween), now the patrol is being pumped out of my diesel tank......
Lets hope it will work out fine.... Will post an update when we are up and running again....

I think you should get it to a Land Rover garage as soon as possible before more damage is done to the engine Have you driven 500miles using the petrol in the tank Welcome to the Global Warming Corner.

You need more professional help than me...
But I believe that you should:-
1. Refill with branded top quality fuel (extra additives) and NOT supermarket or low spec fuel.
2. Add your favourite diesel additive - possibly double dose.
3. Possibly fit a new fuel filter.
Good luck

If you have driven and have had an engine issue (ie no power) my advice is to get it straight away to the closest LR dealer on the back of a recovery vehicle.
Do not switch on the ignition again - this primes the fuel pumps etc and it is going to make it worse
Don't apply the park brake so the car can be winched up onto a recovery lorry.
I would not expect to see any positive results by draining the tank yourself and refilling with diesel after driving half a kilometer. Especially as it looks like you filled up from (very) empty. There will be a lot of pure petrol in the tank, pipes, injectors etc.
And check to see if your insurance covers miss-fuelling.
TBH - I hope I am wrong, but I would be prepared for the worst. Sorry. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

I can agree with other posters, you have a problems since the whole fuel system is now filled with petrol. Maybe draining and refilling with diesel, allowing it to circulate the system and bleeding before starting could work, but could also mean damaged HP pump, injectors etc.
If you need any local advice on LR competent garages etc in Sweden, let me know.

Hi Guys,
We are driving again! . We where toyed to a garage in Orebro. There we used the fuelpump to drain the tank completely (short circuit the relais). We then filled it up with 5 liters to clean the fuelsystem. And then filled it up with 60....
Starting took some time like 5min, but then it started to work again...
We are now back on track after a stop of 8 hours..
Lets hope no long term issues.
Thanks all for your help /Joan

Good news
I would caution you though to get it all checked out immediately when you are home. Petrol does horrible things to diesel engines. Last thing you want to find is a long-term issue. Or even a different issue that LR refuses to cover under warranty just because of this mishap. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Good news Joan, hope the rest of the trip is OK!
Normally 2005 D3's (according to Joans D3 icon) are out of LR warranty anyway?
