The compressor overheats pretty easily,so I think you've done the right thing in leaving it alone...I find it strange you don't have the yellow dash warning (which is one step away from the dreaded red one)....but as you said,it's working for now "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Maybe a bit of a shot in the dark but do you have a suspension leak(s), and by being left plugged in on charge all night, the compressor has been on overtime, keeping the vehicle raised by continuing the inflation. So when you thought the vehicle was in access mode it had actually just sunk. Hence also the wait to cool down message.
When I had a TD5 it had a leaky back end for a week until I replaced the air bags. One night I left it on charge overnight due to sub zero weather and a load of short trips. I was surprised to find that the ECU sensed the higher voltage coming in and in the morning the vehicle was sat at normal height as the compressor had kept the leak topped up all night on and off due to the vehicle beinng on charge, despite the ignition being off... whereas it would usually drop to the bump stops.

That's a really good point or just coincidence, but would the compressor work while the car is asleep but on charge?
Not been out again, want to leave it a good few hours to see if it drops any - Not not holding out much hope, but at least I can put off costs for a day or two
Cheers (as usual ) Iggy/Ieuan

Ignition has to be on (Engine running in fact) for the compressor to run, unless there is a sticky relayMy D3 Build Thread

UPDATE: "Suspension will raise when system cool"
Hi all,
Well I suspected it wouldn't last and it didn't but after research it felt that the issue was related to the valve block, replacement was ordered and noticed that the old one was full of water - so suspected air wasn't getting through to the front. This may not explain the "Overheating" message on the compressor though
Replacing had the desired effect as air was now going through to the front, but this was then followed by a loud hissing noise coming from the front wheel arch. Further inspection revealed this:

So seems that there was a leak in the air pipe and perhaps this now explains the 'compressor overheating' error, as it was obviously overworking due to leak - may also explain why the block failed??
It was close to the top of the FBH, and further inspection revealed that the top of the FBH exhaust was leaking hot air, which was being pushed out directly on to the air pipe.
Before fitting the FBH timer, if it was cold the FBH would come on while car was in motion, but the flow of air as the car travelled along meant that no heat was pushed onto the Air pipe. But by fitting the FBH timer I was able to run the FBH while car was asleep, it meant that the FBH was running while car was stationary, thus pushing hot air onto the air pipe.
As soon as I then got in and started the car, Air was pushed through pipes, hit the area that was by now hot and soft and burst through. At the same time I believe that the valve block was also failing
Anyway, if you have a timer fitted, it may be worth you checking the top of the FBH exhaust for any leaks and perhaps even replace/fix the exhaust come up with a temporary heat shield to protect the air pipe
Well, that's what I think happened anyway
Car now running like a lovely thing.....temporary heat shield fitted around exhaust pipe and new exhaust pipe ordered
Hope all of that made sense?
EDIT: Pics added, sorry not very clear, but you can see the new pipe and the temporary heat shield on the FBH exhaust

Do you have any error messages, does the compressor fire up, is there hissing sounds ?
Have you checked for leaks before paying someone to do the very same thing ?
Bit more info might yield a fix that avoids a trip to a garage

I have the same issue, I started the car first thing in the morning today and I try to select off road height but instead of lifting the dash just says “suspension will raise when system cools” but I haven’t used it all day
Does anyone know why this would happen? Any way to reset/overrode it?

I had the same problem a few weeks ago, compressor temp reading 190 degrees even though the car had been off all night, new compressor sorted it.
I used one of the cheaper Hitachi lookalikes from eBay £299
And so far so good
