Help Needed With Rooftent

hi guys

I bought a rooftent today (seemed like a good idea at the time!). What is the best way to fit it roof rack or roof bars?
I quite like the look of the short FR rack.
Any ideas/pics would be great Thumbs Up

For as good as it can be, here are a few pics of the D3, getting ready for Morocco... (wheels still need to be swapped).

Been warned again and again about the weight of the beast, but I don't see what I can really do about that.... (taking seat 6 and 7 out ? but how ?)

roof tent is a ugly "chinese pretending to be american" make, luckily sold at very decent prices by a german company on ebay...

If I was to dismiss the weight warning, I would imagine that there is still space for two waffle boards on both side of the tent ladder... Shocked Shocked
A second D3 ! This time with all whistles and bells (Auto, 7seats, Diff Lock, RAI, all kinds of protections, winch, Extended range tank, iPod adapter....)
First time twice the same car ! and first time third car of the same brand !

I'm loving it !

Thanks Mehari
great pics i think i am going to go for the short FR rack as it will only take the tent, im sure that will change though to spotlamps at the front of the rack worklamps at the back cb aerials. i wont be able to resist Smile

Yes, the old "I bought a [insert item here] today (seemed like a good idea at the time!)" is very familiar... 8)

I am thinking about a roof tent. Almost convinced the wife that it's a good idea. Almost.

I would also like the short (~1.6m) FR rack (this one) but have been thinking about the best way to mount it.

nwoods (top bloke Nathan, provider of excellent information here and on other LR forums) posted some great pics of his Hannibal rack on some Thule mounts/cross bars. Scroll down this page to see the last pic (might need to register to see the pics, but it's worth it; good forum). LRR Forum link

I was thinking of trying something similar with the FR rack. Replace the standard LR roof tracks with the FR ones, get some Yakima landing pads and control towers plus the crossbars (although they are round, not sure about mounting issues), then attach the FR rack to the crossbars. This should give an easily removable rack leaving the landing pads on the FR tracks when not using the rack.

Might be a disaster waiting to happen, but so long as I can get landing pads to fit the FR tracks, and either clamp the rack to the round bars ok or get a round->square adapter for the yakima towers, it should be a very sturdy and flexible set-up. When I say flexible, I mean quick-detach plus having the FR tracks on will allow for potentially heavier loads when the roof tent isn't used or a larger rack is needed.

Front Runner as well... but contrarely to the rest of the FR things installed on the car, this is not the best one on the market (the handle is pretty much to the side of the mount, making it quite hard to open...

Space is very scarce on the roofrack, you can see that the spare wheel is a bit too much to the side, otherwise I would'nt have been able to put the two aluminium boxes on. As we are 5 in the car + a 55L fridge, you can imagine we need all the capacity available...

Firstly ,Sorry to take the thread OT.

Thanks Mehari Thumbs Up One other question(s) , it looks as though its the original rear bumper that you have on? So does the FR spare holder just affix to the rear steel bumper bar ? Any chance you could take a few other pics if you could spare the time Thumbs Up
