HELP! No Power Steering and Squeal
Hi Guys,
SWMBO has just called to say that the D3 has now power steering. There is also a squeal coming from the engine.
I assume this means that the belt that drives the power steering pump is probably slipping?
Anyone confirm or got any other ideas?
It drives ok backwards and forwards so it's not the EPB sticking on.
If it is a belt can anyone shed any light on how I can check / where it is / and how to replace?
Thanks in advanceD3 HSE MY05 Auto

Squeel could come from the Power Steering pump Bearing being shagged!Bodsys Brake Bible

It will be the serpentine belt at the front of the engine. I would doubt it has snapped, as this would affect other systems like alternator and aircon.
I would say from your description that the power steering pump has seized up and the squeel is the belt slipping on the power steering pump pulley. I would not drive like that in case it damages something else.

Its the big belt that runs round all the pullys on the front of the engine ..idealy you would need to remove the cowling in between the radiator and fan , but you can see some of it without removingG4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Guys,
Thanks for all the feedback - I knew the usual suspects would come to my aid.
Anyway the diagnosis is that it is the tensioner that has seized up. It is driveable and when rev'd the steering is easier as more power is getting through to the pump.
Luckily I have a spare tensioner to hand as I was going to replace it when I do the cambelt change at the weekend so hopefully it should be a straightforward fix. I think the tensioner is probably full of mud
I should have acted on my post about cleaning the engine bay after off roading! Hey ho
Thanks again boysD3 HSE MY05 Auto

Thanks Wiggs, Should be ok as it won't be me doing it!
I have a very good mate who does all the difficult stuff, I just hold things and make the tea and take photos to post on the forum to help other people!
My mate is a pro mechanic and he said he'll "bob" on a new tensioner before we take it to his garage to fit the new cambelt.
Thanks again for the help
I got a price for the rails you were after BTW, I forgot to post, but at £229 I didn't think you'd want to know!
I think Neil's price was looking like the best last time I saw.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

ive had the tensioner replaced on mine cos the bearings were knackered - it sounded like a bag of nails. Dealer said I was lucky the belt had not come off and shredded as some they have had like that have caused all sorts of collateral damage by ripping through electric cables as it broke.Duncan

Neil - I did mean you yes.
Update on this. The old tensioner was . Took it off and stuck a new one on, took about 20 mins and was all complete before 7am!
It was a straightforward jub, just difficult because of the space and the fan.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

e's making the screaming noise
Hi Wiggs, have you got the info on belt tensioner replacement handy? I need to change either the alternator or tensioner, once I've worked out which one's making the screaming noise - so if you've got the guidance for both those jobs it would be much appreciated
Any suggestions on how to tell which one is making the noise - they're close together so it's hard to tell when the engine's running, despite the very loud noise!
