Help please ABS warning light, park brake fault etc |
|
So wife drove disco from Scotland to Herts on a Friday. Very quickly into the journey brake pad warning light came up. Flashed, stayed on and went off. Did this all the way to Herts. 5 hour journey.
I took it to Alymer Motors in Potters bar and a ÂŁ144 quid lighter had new front pads. Wanted it to be safe for journey home.
Then took it to Tesco for a wash and then a couple of short journeys ferrying people to a 40th b day party. On start up last night comm errors came up, assumed it was due to short journeys, keys left in ignition when pads being done etc etc.
Tried to start it this morning and nothing, just ticking noise and lots of errors including abs, park brake etc. Assumed it was the battery, jumped it and it started. 150 miles later needed diesel, turned off filled it and it re started on the button. I was happy, just low battery !! Sorted
200 miles later went to co op on way back to Scotland and tried to start it and dead as a stuffed parrot. ABS warning light, park brake fault and just clicking when turning it over.
Had another jump start and it started on the button. Since being home put battery on charge and within 30 mins ctek said it was done. So have to assume battery and alternator are ok. (Should be as exide and alternator are less than 3 years old.
So any suggestions, over zealous jet wash at Tesco, electrical issue or loose earth? Suggestions seriously appreciated please. Having to ask for a jump on every start isn't practical........
Thanks and I have hit the red wine, been a long frustrating day ! James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Would think you need to test your battery in the morning with a multi meter (a 12 hour rest should give you a fairly true battery state/ voltage) MY24 Defender 90 X-Dynamic HSE

Will do. Had assumed as it was essentially fully charged tonight the battery was Ok ? The exide isn't that old either ? James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

At least then could be either ruled out as fault ,or could well be the fault 🤔 MY24 Defender 90 X-Dynamic HSE

If battery test good, check alternator voltage with the engine running less than 14v doubtful alternator.
Check that the earth links are good where they bolt to body as this is a known problem

Sounds like your alternator has gone classic signs, I would get it sorted asap, if you dont you will kill your new battery as well.

Battery and alternator test being done this morning. Alternator isn’t that old so will be annoyed if it is that James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

It was a landrover alternator and been fine since fitted. Will see what the garage say once it is plugged in. Appreciate all the help and responses. James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Garage has said battery is goosed. Has a bad cell apparently. Looked it up and the premium exide I bought last time was 4 years and a month old. Guaranteed for 4 years so won’t be able to do much aka come back and already bought a new one via Tanya. Is this normal length of life for these batteries ? Had hoped it would have lasted a tad longer than that ? James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

At least here (Finland) warranty periods aren’t absolute for consumers so if you’re a month over it might make sense to call the manufacturer’s customer care and have a talk. I thought the same would be EU wide.

Euro Car Parts not interested. As it is a month over guarantee their solution was for me to buy a new one at ÂŁ40 quid more than Tanya. Said I would leave it !
Had hoped it would have lasted longer to be fair. James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.
