This usually caused by a dodgy clock spring behind the steering wheel (it happened to me although it was intermittent)...
The fault usually also causes SRS/Airbag faults, but in my case it didn't....just intermittent cruise control and radio button operation.
New clock spring fixed it completely. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Learner driver just whacked my tow bar when she turned in a car park. No damage to mine but I had to wreck her front bumper to get free! I was parked so her fault!Clubs Mantec, Tasmods, LEDS, AT2s on 18s, Maxxis Bighorns on 17s, Remote FBH, BAS. ReMap, BSS., RLD Personalised SWP., Safari Snorkel, Faultmate, Three Musketeers & MUD

Make sure your tow bar locking mechanism isn't damaged at all

Mine has this problem too, intermitent cruise control, bit of a gamble as to whether it will turn on or off.
Usually turning the ignition off resets things.
Should I be looking towards the clock spring or buttons?
How much does the clock spring cost?
Cheers
