Help required with Waeco CF80

Picked a Waeco CF80 up of ebay and I'm having problems with the front control panel. Plugged it in to the mains and the compressor runs and the inside compartment cools quite quickly but I cant select the turbo option or alter the temperature. The front LED gauge is stuck at the first two lights, has anyone any ideas before I get onto the seller?

Cheers Ken, of what I seemed to have gleemed from some 4x4 sites is that the CF80 has two switches at one end, these are low/Med/High relating to the battery voltage cut out threshold i.e if set to High then the fridge will cut out when the battery level is at say 12.5v and when set to Low it cuts out at say 10.5v. The other switch is the marked Emergency and I think this overides the other switch and will keep drawing current until the battery is nuke. Since posting I've taken the control module to bits and it seems the soft touch keypad is not making proper contact with the switches underneath. I now can select all the LED's on the readout but I cant select the turbo option. It doubt if its voltage related as I've got it running off the mains at the moment unless its a rectifyer problem. I'm going to leave it running for a pair of hours with a thermometer in it and see what temp it gets down to. I hate ebay at times but at £300 it proved too much of a temptation!

the turbo button puts full power onto the unit until it your desired temp in the shortest time then runs at whatever it was set to before hitting the turbo button. it does do something, yours is Censored Laughing

I've sorted the problem with the key pad, the little push button plastic bits have snapped off the control unit wich I have know replaced. The Turbo button works when it wants to and I was under the impression that it made the compressor and fan run continueously until the selected temperature was reached but this one lit up for about a minute with fans and comp running and then went off when the cycle had finished. Cheers Norto for the post, how do you rate the CF80? Would have liked an Engel but I'm strapped for cash Rolling Eyes

I wouldnt buy another one......it uses too much power when freezing (basically runs non stop)
Ive heard the Engel does the same (they both use Danfoss compressors).
I spoke to a bloke who had another brand and it only ran for a couple of hours a day on freeze...cant
think of the brand name

the engel uses a sawafuji swing motor ( http://www.sawafuji.co.jp/english/ ) and is one of the few that does not use a danfoss compressor. I agree about the power consumption and it doesn't appear to be as well insulated as others as it looses temp quickly and build quality is lacking.

Grumpy
Are you saying that the Engel also uses a lot of power.
I think not enough insulation is definitely a problem with the Waeco.
Did Engel ever use the Danfoss compressor

The Engel draws about 2.5A and will run continuously until down to temperature, after that it will cycle, an Optima yellowtop will provide enough power to keep a fridge full of beer chilled for 28 hours 8)
dunno about the Waeco but the Engel uses the 12VDC input to power a small inverter which in turn runs the compressor, this means that the fridge will switch off at about 10.5VDC protecting both the battery and compressor - in my mind, well worth the money Thumbs Up
BTW, it managed to keep the beer at an indicated -2 degrees C with an ambient of +48 degrees C 8)

TFC
I bought a Century deep cycle about 2 months ago and it would
run the fridge at -18 for about 19 hours, but last week the fridge was shutting down after
12 hours so i payed the extra and replaced it with an Optima yesterday

Quick browse of their site doesn't give any charging voltage specs but at a guess the reason for degraded performance is due to the D3's higher voltage charge output, I've still got the original Optima yellowtop I fitted on my first D3 in July 2005 on my current D3 - keeping the beer chilled nicely! 8)

I have both frigs. Will never buy an Waeco again at any price. My Waeco has problems with the battery voltage cut outs since day 1. It will not run on the main D3 battery at all unless the motor is running. It does run on the aux Yellow top when the engine is off (for a little while).
Nearly everyone I know who has both, prefer the Engel. The Engels have the 240/12 tranformer built in unlike most Waecos.

IIRC, my "old" Engel has a Danfoss compressor.

I agree with CW, Shocked however, they appear to run Sawafuji (sp?) now.

A mate of mine had a Waeco. The coolant pipes fell apart on the corrugated outback roads (this may not be a problem in the UK, though Laughing ). It wasn't even useful as an anchor after that.

He now has an Engel.
