Help with working out what it could be worth !

I have a very good condition D3 which has had a lot of new parts over the last few years. I don’t want to scrap it and it would appear the engine is dead. Not been diagnosed but it ain’t happy. I have been offered via a very reputable person on the forum to swap the engine over for £4K. This would be for a re-con with 70k on it. Once the engine is swapped over how much do you think it could be worth ? Would need to get at least £5.5 to make it viable. The new engine would come with warranty for 12months. Prices seem to fluctuate a lot but this is a HSE and in decent condition. Any thoughts very welcome !! Bad bits, air con has a leak, sunroof doesn’t work but that’s about it. Lots of upgrades on it also. Thanks and appreciate any suggestions. James

Have a look on ebay and autotrader for rough idea of prices.
Mileage effects the cars value.

Thanks and have been doing so. Not sure the fact it has a replacement engine would put people
Off ? They seem to be about £5.2k but with higher mileage so maybe a tad more than that ?

You dont need to tell people it has had a another engine.
I suppose the engine number is relevant, but to be honest I dont know where it is located!

Prices are falling all the time as they age..
Newest one is 10yrs old and oldest is 15yrs, in most normal car buyers eyes that makes them old cars that carry a financial risk most cannot afford to take or risk.

Just looked on ebay and theres 5 for sale for between 4 and 5k, some from a dealer.

Add in other parts that are worn and u/s as the engine ie swapped and you will end up over your budget.

Tend to agree. Worry my heart is ruling my head. Been such a good car over the last 10 years just feel like I am doing it a disservice by breaking it for parts and or scrapping. Need to find a decent local mechanic who can diagnose it and then make a call. The garage who did the work don’t seem to be that interested or bothered and am pretty sure what ever went wrong they will claim it wasn’t down to them. Also I supplied all the parts from Advanced so will blame the parts. I think the warning signs were when it took them three attempts to get the oil pump fitted properly with no leaks. It has an issues between the crank and the timing belt for sure as when it is turned over the crank is moving but the engine is not. Reckon an idler bolt was over tensioned and belt has come off. But I haven’t the skill to strip the engine and find out for myself. Wish I did. If anyone knows a decent LR mechanic in the Scottish borders area let me know. Mike is too far away unfortunately otherwise would have asked him to take a look.

He is in Dundee and I am near Berwick Upon Tweed. Good couple of hours away and would need to go on a flat bed.

Would breakdown cover get it up here?

Failing that, we use a few local companies who occasionally travel South. If its not an urgent pick up, I expect they could tie it in with one of those jobs, to save a bit of cash on a recovery Thumbs Up

Its cost vs value. If you're looking to fix and sell on then its probably not worth it. However, if your looking to repair and use then its probably worth it. Its a lot of car for not a lot.

If you want to move it to DM can you not hire a trailer and tow it with the Rexton? I hired a trailer recently and it was £90 for the day.

How are you getting on with the Rexton?

Mike thanks for coming back to me. Been sat in my drive for about 6 weeks so not urgent. Can you please explore if any of them are coming down South at any point ? Rough idea on costs to get it to you. Once you have had a look work out what to do with it then. Thanks James

Must be worth the relatively small cost to get it to someone you (and the forum) trusts. That way whatever the decision, you’ll have the peace of mind knowing you’ve been given and considered all the options/costs and couldn’t have done any more.
Good luck

Replace the engine and get another 10 years out of it. If you break it and buy another you could have a similar issue again. At least with a recon engine you’ll have piece of mind that it’s going to be reliable for a good time. When my oil cooler failed I had it replaced at a reliable Indy. My asked if I was going to get rid after that....never.... what’s the point? Buy something else for that to break aswell? No thanks. I’ve been worried about my 05 plate for a while but it’s just done over 1000 miles through Scotland and never missed a beat. 161k on it now.

It has already been replaced with a new car. Non JLR as sort of had enough But my wife could use it instead of her CRV for a while and we could move that on I guess. To be honest if it does get fixed I will be selling it I think. The new car does what the Disco did so now superseded.
