Hidden Winch Mount for D3
Nice day today, so i decided to make a start on fitting my hidden winch mount. I opted for this option because i wanted a winch for the occasional off roading but did'nt want a great big black thing sticking out of the front of my nice D3 and messing up its approach angle at the same time.
This mounting system (French Made) fits inside the bumper in that space you can see if you look through the lower slot in the grill.
When finished the hawser slot for the plasma line should be almost flush with the front of the bumper, then i am going to try to find a nackey little way to hide it with the number plate.
I decided the winch i would use would be a "Tabor 9000" this is made by Warn and strangly enough all the parts are the same and interchangable with there more expensive models, the "Tabor" range is a bit cheaper but still rated at 9000lbs and as i will not be using it every day i thought why spend the extra. Instead i spent the differance on a nice "Lodar" radio remote control.
Having just finished the first day of what i think is a two day job i have to say this is not a job for the faint hearted. Or in my case Hungover.
Never the less i managed to get the whole lot pulled to bits and the winch, control box, remote box, all mounted and wired just before it got dark i only started a 3.00pm so that wasent bad.
Pictures in my gallery.
I would be happy to give any information and help that anyone needs to be able to do this, but please don't go on about "insurance" or "warrantee" issues.

Good Lord Man !!!
I have never witnessed such work to be done to a car before. In car PC, sound system, phone interface, 220v inverter & now a hidden winch system.
Some dedication, huge amount of work, serious enthusiasm for gadgets, all resulting in a truly unique Disco 3 !!
BTW, serious looking tyres too……………..
I’m tired just looking at your gallery
What ‘s next ???

Those are amazing photos. I am quite impressed with your adventurous nature to delve into your vehicles inner workings. Not to mention your heathly bit of technical skills as well!
I would like to know more about how you took apart the center console that surronds the radio. My knee rubs on mine, and squeaks loudly when it does. I want to take off that bit of plastic and put some squishy neoprene behind it to prevent it from squeaking. However, I cannot deduce how to remove that console.

NW

Can't decide if you're a genius or a lunatic - especially considering how much these things cost over there!!

10°+ is warm enough to "chocke" the engine if the air can't be cooled.
But, I do love the concept, way better than the LR one, as it sticks out too far.
But the cooling of the intercooler is more important
Someting else I thought of whe looking at the pictures...
How will you check if you'r cable is well "rolled-up"
Even if you take a rope....In a time of chimpanzees, I was a penguin.

You are going to have problems with your intercooler !!!
On a warm day, don't expect too much from your engine performance !!
i antisipate it working better, normally there is a plastic trim in that space that somewhat obstructs the air flow to the intercooler. The winch actually obstructs less airflow, thats what it looks like to me anyway, i suppose we will see. Anyway we don't get many warm days in Ireland !!!!

Winch mount/Intercooler
Well it managed to rain all day, but the show must go on. I managed to get the bumper cover cut out and refitted, i have added the pics to my gallery. I took a pic of the view to the intercooler, as you can see there in no problem with air flow, the winch is above it.

Havent got to that bit yet, I am thinking along the lines of a stanless piano hindge and perhaps some indistrial velcro to hold the top. (you wern't that far off). I am working on the Isolator switch for the winch at the moment, also my old bumper did not have front fogs or front PDC so i have fitted them at the same time, just wating for some paint to dry at the moment on the isolator switch bracket, i t's getting dark now.
