Would any of you D3 gurus please explain how the HDC actually works?
Is it just operating the ABS on each wheel? Or is it on the central transmission,as per a Defender hand-brake? Would you say that on slippery steep hills, you might be better without it? Or not? Seems to snatch a bit and I thought maybe that could initiate an unstoppable slide when the hill is slippery enough and steep enough?

HDC activates the brakes, ABS releases the brakes as they are about to lock, whereas HDC applies them to keep you under control.
HDC is designed for steep slippery surfaces, its excellent,
dont forget the correct terrain response setting, and command shift if needed...
the speed HDC allows the car to move can also be controlled by the cruise control buttons....

I thought HDC worked both through the brakes and engine braking?
If you set your speed right BEFORE you enter the hill there should be no "sharp" braking and actions about it - if you happily drive onto the hill and then lift off for HDC to kick in then you will planted on the windscreen!!!!

HDC in extremely heavy/packed snow |
|
Was at the Land Rover Experience at Dunkeld on tuesday.Driving through the forestry tracks down very steep gradients and steering around trees without any probs. My mate got out to take some photo's and could only stay on his feet with difficulty. The car was set up for low ratio with command shift selected, special programmes, mud ruts, and never used above 3rd gear.A mixture of engine braking via the command shift and the HDC kept things very tidy. That and the fact that I had a reassuringly confident instructor alongside me made the whole thing rather enjoyable,(allied to the fact that it wasn't my car).
Well worth going to to see how to use the car properly. 2007 TDV6 XS Auto.
