Hill Descent Control (HDC)
When I switch on the HDC my brakes make a real Grating and Scratching noise from what seems to be the front discs when doing down hill.
Switch it off and use the foot brake no problem!
Should I be worried?

Grating and Scratching noise, oh yes thats why I bought a Land Rover. Mind you think it works better switched off and in first (or second) low box.
But just can't work out why it does it, but not under the foot brake I thought something got jammed in the disc at first! Then a flash of ££££££££'s kep coming up on the dash display

The noise and feel is the same as any other cars ABS I have used (which is essentially the system it uses). I supposse the difference between HDC and using the gears is the HDC will exert more brake force to the wheels with more traction, so in theory will provide much better speed control and ultimate stability. I personally wouldn't turn the HDC off if I was navigating a particularly steep descent. Also its worth mentioning that gear selection and revs tell the HDC how fast you want to go down any given hill.

Also bear in mind that the diffs will unlock as you go downhill - if you rely purely on engine braking, the rear wheels may start to slide, causing a loss of control ...Regards,

The noise was not what I expected or anticipated, the outings I have been out on (not many to be honest) where I have had to use HDC I was the only D3 so nothing to compare against or ask!
All points taken about using HDC and will take these onboard for future use. Previous cars I've had with ABS and traction control, I have never really felt them kicking in, perhaps thats how good they were, but then again it was a Toyota .

During the Bala event earlier this month the LRE guys said the noise was basically built into the system so people knew it had kicked in and was working (basically a confidence builder). It was not actually needed as part of the operation.
He also said the same braking system on the D3 was used on the D4's but the noise had now been removed so the HDC on the D4 is virtually silent.For details on the next Kielder Safari click visit the Kielder Safari website

I test drove a D4. It made the same noise down hill with HDC on as does my D3. So I do think it's still in the D4s but might be quiter.. I personlay couldn't tell if it was quiter but It definatly was there as I commented to the sales guy and we had a chat about the noise etc

HDC was invented by Land Rover and first made an appearance on the Freelander 1.
Essentially the system uses the ABS system with sensors etc. to prevent the wheels from locking up whilst travelling downhill and thus prevent an out of control slide.
The noise is the sound of the brakes being applied and released very quickly. It is perfectly normal and you need to worry more when you don't hear it!
If you have the Auto box (and probably the same on a manual) the speed at which HDC cuts in is gear dependent and obviously using 1st gear in low ratio will give you maximum engine breaking. If you have the cruise control buttons then you can increase and decrease the speed at which HDC cuts in.
Also make sure you have HDC on when going up a steep hill. If you fail to make it up, engage reverse and allow the HDC and engine breaking to bring you back down in a controlled manner.
The reason you won't have heard the noise in other vehicles is because a lot of other 4x4's don't have HDC or similar.
HDC is a great system and allows a lot of control when going down hill, far more than I've ever had in anything just using engine breaking.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Very true, especially if you are on a sandy pay and play site.
You'll be amazed at how good engine breaking is without HDC, but if you've got something steep and potentially damaging stick HDC on for peace of mind.D3 HSE MY05 Auto
