Hobbyist spray gun kit
Hi
Have been looking at buying a hobbyist spray gun kit as I would like to spray my door handles on the D3 , don’t want to take the handles off
As with the mini spray guns am wondering if I’ll get a better finish over trying to use a full size spray gun along with better control using a mini spray gun
Just wondered if there are any particular kits that stand out for quality etc plse
Will also be handy for other little items
Assume u can’t get kit that will attach to a full size air compressor , have got a regulator built in
Many thks as always

Personally I'd remove the handles as its awkward to manipulate the gun satisfactorily in the areas behind them. For this I have always used a std gravity gun similar to the Devilbiss. Perhaps a mini gun would get in there more easily but I think you would have a better result with handles off whichever gun you use.
Just a bit more work though! yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Hi
Many thks
Indeed got a lot of reading to do, as I wish to do the wheel arch trims and front bumper , will only be doing the plastic panels in black
Will buy a second hand front bumper for the fog light cutout etc and expect it will be marked being second hand
Funny enough I noticed this and looks as though u can run it off a compressor , have two lines on mine , installed a regulator , water trap and also one line has an oiler other doesn’t so a dry line ie for tyre inflator , spray gun
Recently had to change a rear door lock and was a right pain getting the handle off, suppose just worried of breaking bits , but indeed would be better removed and can then at hang them up and not have to worry about masking them
Just a pain getting them off , unless I pull then forward as though u were opening the door and put something there to hold them forward , hope that makes sense

Hmm...have you been sipping the happy juice I think an air brush gun is OK for small areas or specialised custom painting. I would not attempt to spray a bumper with it. The other thing you need to consider is that even though you have a water filter, once air leaves it and enters the air line to the gun, that air can often condense due to the temp differential. (compressed air temp vs w/shop ambient temp) This can mean you have water in the paint at the nozzle Take off the handles and get the right result
Its only time and money yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Apologises , meant using one of those hobbyist spray guns for the handles and the larger gun for the bigger trim parts
Would be there quite a while spraying a bumper with an air brush
Thks, and see what u mean know ref the condense
Ref the handles , I assume the actuators have to come out as well , shame as the later handles I believe are in 2 x parts and unclip

Spraying is tricky even for the accomplished professional. There are many factors which will affect the outcome, chiefly temperature and humidity, and that's with top end equipment! If you do take the bits off would you not consider popping into tour local spray painter and ask them to do it? You could do the prep and save a few bob !yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Hi
Was going to spend the winter preparing panels etc, will also be buying a second hand front bumper , so it has the fog light apertures and will spend the time rubbing that all down ready for the spring
Only thing is I only have the D3 so if I took the handles off wouldn’t be able to drive it
It was one of the main reasons I got the air compressor , for air tools / under sealing and having the facility to spray small panels, not paintwork though as know that takes real expertise
Have some old panels I can practice on , so would like to at least attempt it and see how it comes out
Couldn’t agree more and Indeed know it takes many years to learn how to spray properly , also thought about maybe taking some basic lessons over the winter time
Thks again

What about you get a set of covers for the handles, then paint those? Lots of them on eBay.

You do not need to buy another front bumper if all you're wanting is the fog light cut outs.
On the reverse side of your existing bumper everything is there showing you where the cut out needs to be. Looks like this;
Just drill through and cut out the infill, simples:

Hi narpy
Many thks, I looked at some pics the other day and wasn’t sure how easy it was the drill the fog lights holes or the actual mountings for the fogs , inc how neat I could get it
Is that where the fog light trims go over to cover the hole then plse
thks as always

Yeah, the fog light bezel will hide a multitude of sins.
You only need the light, bezel, captive nut clips and wiring loom.
It is very easy, because the cutting template is on the inside of the bumper, honestly, you'll struggle to get it wrong. Mods:
