Home made drawer system
Many of you on this forum will no doubt have a professionally made drawer system for your disco. Long have I been in awe of them and wanted one for my disco, but at nearly £1000 minimum I cannot justify it. About 10% of the vehicles value I’d suspect which for the benefit I’d get is just not worth it when I shoot once or twice a week, and carry my dog maybe once.
For that reason (and the long dark winter evenings driving me to boredom) I decided to make my own. I’ve seen various home made versions online by others and I’ve made a few bits for the back of previous landed I’ve owned so had some practice. I can do a price breakdown for anybody whose interested but roughly it’s come in at about £150 or just under (not including the dog guard which I had been meaning to fit for a while. It’s vital as the dog could probably step over the headrest now he’s raised up).
Overall I’m quite happy, it looks okay considering it was made by a plum like me and the only thing I’m not certain about is the drawer as I didn’t use heavy duty rollers (mainly due to expense). It simply slides in and out by itself. It fits snuggly so doesn’t wobble but there is just enough play to allow it to ‘snag’ sometimes when I’m pushing it in. There may be a knack to it which I need to work out and it may get easier with time. However I might have to alter it and fit some sliders (I designed it so I can add them after if needed). Other than that I will probably make some hooks to go on the dog guard to carry my guns in their slip and most importantly the dog seems to like it. Pics...

That looks like a cracking system, for a fair price!
I would be interested to see some more pictures and detail into how you made it as I am currently thinking of making something very similar.

Discovery3ski and Dangerous you absolute legends. I followed your advice and rubbed all the surfaces that slide on eachother with a candle... sure enough the drawer now runs like it’s on rollers! Outstanding thank you.
I used the drawers for the first time in anger yesterday while shooting on a local farm, and fortunately the drawer works nicely even while there’s weight on the top of it. My worry was that when the dog is on top of it the weight of him might make it sag and prevent the drawer from coming out but luckily that’s not the case. Having a drawer makes it so much easier to grab another box of cartridges or some gloves etc without routing through about 5 different boxes and bags around the dog like I previously had to. Admittedly mine is probably and inch or 2 higher than some of the metal ones I’ve seen but that’s because it’s made from wood. In order to be strong enough to hold a good amount of weight it needs to be made from decent sized timber. I think I used 34mm x 34mm for the carcass, and I don’t think I would have wanted to go much bigger or smaller. Most of the home made versions I have seen opt for 2 drawers instead of one, and of course if you have a support down the centre of the unit between the two drawers then you wouldn’t need to go so thick on the structure, but I was hell bent on having just one big drawer as I might wish to break my guns down and put them in the drawer out of sight at times, and I felt that a full width drawer is what I’d need for that.
The weight isn’t actually too bad and it’s easily liftable by one person which is good considering it has an 18mm too top and a 15mm bottom.
The two turnbuckles which anchor it down as really solid but can be removed in about five minutes so should I need to change a tyre I can just whip it out and stack it up at the side of the road.
I can post more elaborate measurements and details of how I made it if anybody would like me to do so, but just thought I’d report back after it’s first use.Discovery 3 XS - sold

You’re welcome!
EDIT: IGNORE ADVICE BELOW AS THE SEATS NEED TO COME UP ALSO!
Leaving the advice below for your amusement....
If the draw slides out fully, what not make a hole in the underside inline with the spare lowering bolt and keep a ratchet with the appropriate socket in the draw? That way the spare could be lowered without having to remove the base!

I actually planned to do exactly that as I saw it in somebody else’s DIY version but as you say the rear seats are in the way, so I’m guessing the one I saw must have been in a commercial or 5 seater.Discovery 3 XS - sold
