Hot Brake - the first issue!

Well, the day was bound to come buying a used D3 that I'd come across my first issue!

That said, I wasn't entirely expecting it to be less than a week in.

Walked passed the NSR wheel and could feel a glow and smell a nice toasty aroma! Looks like either the EPB is holding or there is a sticky caliper. Drove it round the block and there is a slight increase in temp between the NSR and OSR disk. At least it's not red hot within a mile of driving!

Can't hear anything unusual when driving or braking, all goes in a straight line. Is there any easy way to tell what's to blame or resolve? Either way it'll be getting fixed at a dealers if I can't do it easily.

Any idea how long would it take to wear through the shoes or pads if either are binding or sticking?

Sound like a seized calliper, had my rear nearside changed for less than £200.
I started off with nothing and Ive still got most of it left.

Not long I would say.....
Get it checked out pronto. Could be either of the issues you mention.

Gut feel would be the caliper, for some odd reason it's a bit of an issue the the NSR. OSR seems to be fine!

Had the same with mine the other day. I replaced discs, pads and caliper. Chat to TLO as he got me a caliper for about £50

It could be EPB as well, woth quickly taking the pads off and having a look at the state of them, it will give you an idea if they are being held, you'll also see if you can retract the piston.

....... or jack that wheel up and see if its still stiff with the EPB off, caliper is my bet, very easy t change and TLO is your man.

Did you get it from a dealer or other garage, if so I would take it back to them and get them to sort. Thumbs Up

Cheers guys, it's off to the dealer tomorrow for a look, fortunately they found a space as the next slot was going to be Monday!

First experience of Taggarts Glasgow service on the phone today was very pleasant, hopefully, their workshop will live up to expectations.

Shall report back tomorrow (hopefully) on their findings!

Would the bearing cause the disk to heat up?

yes, would be upto about 70 degrees C whilst the other discs would normally be at 30c

Interesting, thanks dunc, was thinking last night it would be handy if I had one of th IT thermometers from work.

Not unconvinced it was running hotter than that with a burning smell, right enough there is a bit of a whine about 50mph.

Dropped off at the dealer this morning so we shall see what comes of it.

ive had 3 bearing go, 2 calipers (same one) and the EPB stick - All 3 problems give the same heat symtpoms so you cant assume any one.

if you have a laser thermometer you can check easily. If the caliper isnt at 30c (ish) or less then thats the likely problem. if it is at normal temp and the discs are around 70c then it could be the bearing or EPB

the wheel may not wobble if the bearing has failed but you will hear it if you jack it up and spin the wheel

Thanks, really useful info.

Realising the predictive text on my phone isn't quite in sync with my thoughts! Not helped with me big fingers on the touch screen!

Either way I'm waiting with anticipation to see what the garage appear back with!

Yep I had a glowing disc with my caliper binding. Pads were only a couple of months old, but were in a terrible state when I looked at them.

I replaced discs, pads and caliper and its been fine since. \\must get the other side sorted as well now!
