Hot Wheels !! (and brakes)
Ive had a minor problem over the last few days with my rear near side wheel/brakes. After a long high speed journey the wheel is getting very hot. on some occasions too hot to touch (all 3 other wheels are cool 8) )
I got LRA out on saturday AM cos I wasnt at home so had no tools.. They jacked up the wheel and it was really stiff to turn. removing the wheel revealed that the brakes were binding. LRA guy cleaned all the snowdonia muck off the caliper, pad etc and refitted (All other brakes are of a bit puzzled why only the Rear Left !!).
The pads had been getting so hot that they had started to break up. forntunatly they were brand new 2k miles ago so had plenty of pad left but a lot less than the offside rear. (new pads and discs ordered)
Anyway after a few cups of tea the LRA chap left.
I drove home last night and the wheel was cool
Drove around Bristol today, got back at 15:00 and the wheel was red hot again
Ive just finished stripping the pads off again. Ive checked the rotation of the wheel without the pads as I thought the EPB might be sticking but it would appear not.
The piston moves within the caliper but im not sure if it is releasing properly.
Has anyone had this problem and know what causes it and how to fix it.
ThanksDuncan

my hot nearside rear wheel was definately EBP shoes rubbing, not heard of main pads rubbing.

I thought it could be the cylinder but it comes out when I press the pedal and I can push it back in with a clamp thingy !!.
Its not easy to push back in but then none of them ever were
I wasnt sure if it could be contamination in the pipe but I think thats unlikelyDuncan

May sound daft but if you take the wheel off the other side and check the piston retract as easy or more easily, it could be corrosion forming on the piston behind the seal.
You also say the pad have recently being changed (2k ago) the corrosion can start on the piston between the dust seal and the hyd seal with old pads, then with new pads this corrosion may be restricting the movement of the piston which is now work in a more retracted position.
If you still have the old pad and they have a bit of life left, try refitting them and see if you get the overheating.

been out this morning and its still getting hot, even after i stripped it all down last night
Pads just arrived also so I'm ready to start later today/tonight, but I'm reluctant to do so if im just going to burn the new set out.
Does anyone know the procedure for bleeding the brakes. I might take the entire Caliper and piston to bits and give it a clean.Duncan

You should perhaps have a look at GTR, a days subscription may be well worth it if you want to mess with the brakes. I personally would not bother stripping a caliper down. I've no idea how much a new one will be ?
There was a chap on RRS with some standard calipers for sale recently? Worth checking out over thereI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

yeah, a new caliper might be the way to go, but knowing my luck there will be nothing wrong with the one thats already on Duncan

Thinking out loud. Is the fuel economy poor Have you noticed the DSC or TC lights on
Could the car for some reason be applying the brake to that wheel for instance would a faulty wheel speed sensor confuse the vehicle dynamics to apply the brakes. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Andrew, Fuel Consumption is normal (crap !) and there are no warning lights of any description. If I knock the car into "N" and release the foot brake the car rolls quite freely. There is avery faint squeek from the wheel but over 5mph this cant be heard.
the only signs are a hot wheel and brakepad burning smell when i stop. The car brakes in a straight line and drives in a straight line.
Hadnt thought of it being electrical and "applying" the brake, but would that not cause the car to pull to one side when driving. its all very weird and I'm running of brake pads ! Duncan

Dunc
just a thought (from Simonsi) is one pad wearing, or both, as if its one side, is it the caliper bracket stuck, whereas if its both, it sounds more like a stuck piston.
