Hub unit Mounting Bolts - HELP !!!! |
|
Ok geru's of the forum cometh forth and help me.......
Having attempted removal and replacement of the from N/S hub unit 3 of the 4 bolts removed ok but then the forth clearly not in the festive mood and refused to budge, worst still head of the bolt has rounded
Question is : the bolt has a long thread which suggests that it not only passes through the hub unit to secure hub unit to leg of the suspension but is threaded through the leg also - need confirmation as if tough tatics will be required to remove need to understand what I am up against !
Help appreciated .....

Cut off the head with a angle grinder to release the hub, then try drilling a hole in the centre of the remaining 'stub' applying some heat (not TOO much) then use a stud extractor, or dill out to almost teh same size, and re-tap the thread Never get mad - get even !!

Well that was fun - NOT !!!!!
Got a 15mm hex socket on the bolt head flats, thanks DaveT for the recommendation, couple of turns was looking good then snap ! Bolt sheared However saved cutting the head off . With bolt snapped off started tapping the hub unit to release along the driveshaft , not shifting. Hit it harder but still no movement so numpty neighbor decides to show me how it's done and belts it and the driveshaft gaiter into the bargain-end result no movement but a mullered gaiter . Invited him to leave and go back to his ford Mondeo tin box and that up instead !.
Caution and sublety restored persuaded the unit out of the suspension leg but then found the unit is stuck on the shaft and ain't moving . With the help of the daughters partner who is technician at BAE slowly gets the offending part off, took nearly 2 hours to shift it !. New unit albeit now with 3 functioning bolts fitted in 10 mins ......
New bolt to complete the set from LR stealers 2 mrw,job done just need to replace that mullered now leaking heavily gaiter no thanks to Mondeo man
Thanks for everyones responses - much appreciated

As a short term solution to the gaiter issue Halfords sell a split gaiter that you glue together around the joint with Superglue.
I've used them in the past with lots of success, and currently have one on the drivers side front of the D3.
I put it on as a short term solution a couple of months ago as LR spares departments don't open at the weekend.
Despite buying a replacement LR part I've not got around to fitting it yet, and the Halfords one is holding up despite the freezing temps etc.
When I replaced my front hub I was lucky to have spare bolts in the garage with the correct thread that I could screw in and clout with a hammer from behind to slowly work the hub out of the leg.

The main thing is to keep everything really clean and only attempt to glue about an inch at a time before holding it together. If any grease or muck gets in the joint before gluing it won't stick properly.
To keep the old grease etc off the gaiter whilst you wrap it around the shaft and are gluing it, it's best to wrap the shaft and joint with clean rags or kitchen roll.
The small end is the first to glue, and the hardest, as it needs to be stretched around the shaft and held in position.
The other thing is to make sure you are in a comfy position, as you'll be holding each section together for 10 secs whilst staying still, and you'll be doing about 6 - 8 sections.
I had a Subaru Legacy GTB that I used them on, and did a front one laying on my back in the gutter with one wheel up on the curb whilst on holiday in Devon. One of those on the front did over 50K miles and was still OK when I sold the car.
Good luck.
