Get a big screwdriver and stick it on each injector body(engine running) and listen with your ear to the handle of the screwdriver, I bet you a coffee that may be your noise?
Engiens are scary noisy when you actually listen to them.

Right update, been over and check with a local inde I know and he says the injectors are noisy not the lifters
Now I’ve alread done these off my other car and they were fine in that car but noisy in this one and on diagnostics 3 of them are high one was as high as 1398
So back to square one with the tappety noise
I also have a ticking noise underneath that I can only describe as a snare drum roll when cars hot and reved to 2,000 rpm they’re saying it’s the timing belt or auxiliary belt (already changed auxiliary belt & tensioner )
The timing belt was done at about 80,000 miles before I purchased so was does anyone think it’s a possibility? Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

Thanks for listening Pete, it’s hard to record the noise but you can hear it when the revs are held. I can only describe it as a drum roll snare drum ticking only way sorry Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

To me it sounds like a timing chain tensioner problem

There’s a big difference between timing chains and timing belts! The D3/4 has cam chains that are in the cam cases, each side, and drive one cam from the other.
Failure is not unknown, but I’m not sure if any warning noises are evident?

I should add, if your going to the trouble of changing the valve lifters, you would be dismantling the cam chains.

I think he’s looking for some thing he hasn’t got
If so concerned why not swap the engine from the write off? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I was thinking chains and the tensioners myself. £400 ish
They do give warning noises. Typically on cold start.
Similar painful job as lifters. But worth while
