How do I attach old Thule roof box to wide LR bars? |
|
I have searched the forum, but can't find a definitive answer....
I've got a 10 year old Thule top box that dates back to the days when Thule bars were about an inch square section.
I now have proper LR bars and, of course, they're are too wide for the clamps that came with the top box.
I'm not sure what's the best attachment method- is it to get s wider clamp arrangement, which I've seen mention of but can't find a link to the actual product. Or can you use this Thule T-thingy attachment system, that may work on the LR bars as they are made my Thule?
Can anyone advise? and maybe send me a link to the right adapter/bracket thingy?

Halford sell a fitting kit with 80mm U-bolts that you can adapt to old type Thule boxes. I bought one and I think it was about £14 or so.

Thanks. When you say "adapt" do you just mean "use" or is some fettling required?

you just have to drill extra holes or you can get some threaded bolts with a flat end that slides into the roorbar when you take the rubber strip out

Sorry - didn't understand that. Drill extra holes in what? The roof box doesn't lack holes far enough apart. Its the little flat plates that clamp under the roofbars that are to short.

I bought new (small square section) cross bars and fitting kit (T Track for the roof rails) for my old LR/Thule roof box. Couldn't find any adaptors at all.
To be honest any adaptor would in my opinion make the box sit too high and not be any where near as secure as having the right cross bars.
Your welcome to borrow them if you want as I won't be needing them for a while

I think I had the same problem. I have a Kamei Grizzly roofbox that we bought when we had the Td5. It came with fittings for the (Landrover supplied) Thule roofbars (that are still in the garage somewhere) - they are square section. The brackets don't fit the D3 Landrover supplied crossbars - the t-track ones.
Solution: I bought some t-track adaptors from The Roofbox Company - they work perfectly, and don't raise the height of the box at all. The part number is KM52003, from www.roofbox.co.uk. Cost was £10.00 plus p&p. No fiddling about required, they just use existing roofbox holes.
Regards,
John O

Thanks Stu. I assumed the threaded bolt section then goes up into the roofbox and is held tight by the knurled (sp?) threaded knobs
But where do the little Tee pieces go? Do you have to remove the rubber strip from the upper face of the crossbars and slide the Tee pieces in?

The set I got from Halfords should go straight on a Thule box. They certainly did with mine, BUT the hole spacings were slightly out on the box for the roof bar spacings. Just had to drill a couple of holes in the box. Very easily done, five minutes of a job.

The box I've got has recesses for the cross bars (so the cross bars effectively exit from the side of the box and the box does not sit on top - if you see what I mean), using T piece bolts would not have worked... far too short to go up inside the box. Had to go for either a new box or new cross bars... latter were cheaper by far.

Correct (includinding the spelling!!). The 'plastic block' bit sits inside to spread the load, and the kit even comes with a round sticker to block up the unused hole.
I removed the rubber from the cross-bars. IIRC, I even asked the same question about a year ago!!
This kit makes the box look really neat as you cant see any fixings. Only downside is it takes up slightly more room in the box. Disco 5 HSE Lux

Funny that , only the other day I blew the cobwebs off my roofbox, wondering how the hell I was going to get the U bolts on mine to fit (properly, that is)onto my LR bars. Now I know. Well done everyone.
