I find the stick as offensive as the offset number plate on the D5. Unless your a dinosaur, it has to be the superior rotary knob.
Best part of the D4, rotary dial

The knob and the stick are both 'simple' in realty being electrical 'switches' basically? Wouldn't think it that difficult to design something to switch between both.
Personally prefer the stick in my most recent RRS's to any of the rotary dial one's; somewhere to rest your hand, it just feels 'right'. Also the dial has a 'delay' as such on start up I find (got rotary in my current F-Pace) so you sit and wait for it to rise and turn before you can select a gear, only a few seconds but it just bugs me sometimes.
For those (very) rare occasions I've gone 'manual' the stick is much better than the paddles IMO - in all of my cars with paddles (quite a few) I've probably spent less than 10 minutes using them in total, whatever the brand, often 'giving them a go' and then resigning them, metaphorically, to the "not wanted" bin

I prefer the rotary knob.
The stick can get in the way when in female company 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green
Got to agree with the above two posts, once you get used to the rotary knob, it's far better than the old gearstick
+1
Much prefer the knob, didn't at first but within a couple of weeks, rarely look at it now, just count the notches as I turn it.

I fail to see the issue between stick and rotary knob. It's an auto so its in D for drive and away you go. Even for off-road it has made no difference whether its been a stick or rotary (D3 vs D4).
My D4 looks so much cleaner and less cluttered than my D3 because of the rotary knob. And when off-road i find the flappy paddles on the D4 much better than having to reach for a gear stick when in the D3.MY2008 D3 - It got me hooked...gone

I switch from D to N when stationary, at traffic lights for example. I also switch between D & S regularly. So I use the knob quite a lot.
I've also once or twice made the mistake of thinking I'd dialed across to P when infact it was in R.
I still prefer to use the stick that I had in my 6 speed D3 & D4. Although the knob is aesthetically more pleasing.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Ok, I've got a knob and a stick.
Personally I prefer the stick, but I have also got used to my knob. The stick is better for instant use, whereas the knob needs a deliberate action.
It's all down to the type of car, a normal Disco probably suits the knob, as your less likely to want to drive it in a sporty fashion, however the SVX sounds like it a real beast, so the stick makes more sense.

I wonder when cars will have a joystick instead of a wheel.

All this talk about the knob and how it is not as quick and deliberate as the stick but all knobs also have flaps (flapy paddles) so there is a quick and instant response there if you want something more responsiveMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange
