I have a quick question on MPG
I have a quick question on MPG. What is the recommended drive style to achieve the best mpg? What revs should I be looking to stay within? Should I be I 6th gear at 50mph upwards? What revs should I change gear? I have a 05 D3 manual.
All tips very welcome.

Best tips for better MPG?: Leave it on the drive .
TBH the difference in cost between 22mpg and 26mpg is sod all on a £25K plus car so I would'nt worry.
I tried all sorts and doesnt matter how I drive (either tart or boy racer) its still the same mpg!

just use the torque - steady throttle and anticipate the road ahead etc - just normal good driving.
manually changing through Command Shift will make a small difference but it is easy to forget and find you have travelled the last 200miles in 4th gear and increased fuel consumption
if you are towing a reasonable weighted trailer, i find leaving it in Sport Mode returns better MPG - but ONLY when towing
EDIT ignore me... i just reread the post and see you have a manual - you need to upgrade to an auto Duncan

Neil is so right im afraid.
However I tend to ensure my tyres are pumped up, no extra weight on board, and try to keep it between 2000-2500 rpm.
I can get 30mpg by taking it easy (Manual TDV6 S 54)
But who wants to do that!!
Also I find BP Ultimate helps an mpg or two plus the type of tyres you have on (im now running AT'2 boots and they have cost approx 1mpg)
Hope this helps All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.

As Neil said...
If you're worried about MPG, you've got the wrong motor
They all vary... some settle at 22mpg, some settle at 28
My manual is now sitting at 25 (prob wrong but I cannot be arsed to check it)..
General rule (not that it makes much difference with a diesel) is stick to lower revs, keep the turbo boost down so only use light throttle, and stay in the highest gear without labouring the engine.57 RRS TDV8

What revs would you class as labouring the engine?
Whats the lostest revs that keeps the running comfortable?
I'm not overly bothered about the MPG but i have a guy in my office who has a nissan navara on order and i wanted to beat his mpg when he gets it Hence why looking for best mpg

definately NOT 6th at 50mph, best economy from my old 55 plate TDV6 manual was to sit at about 62mph, in 5th, would get to 33 or 34 mpg.

On a flat surface, changing up through the gears at 1900 RPM is about as normal as normal can be.
6th is a cruising gear, or over drive. If you change up to 6th and the revs drop below 1500 RPM, youv'e probably changed up too soon.
Maximum torque is achieved around 1900 RPM so keeping the revs in that region, will do away with unnecessary gear changes. Obviously speed and speed limits will impact on this.
23 MPG is about average for a D3 - both manual and automatic under normal conditions
In the end however, harsh acceleration and breaking will push your MPG down.

I wouldnt worry about the Navara.
I get 28 on average and if drive like a vicar on the motor way can get 30 or 31 mpg, mainly with cruise at 80mph
However, my son has a Navara (55 plate) and if he is going on long journeys steals the D3 as the Nissan is down in the low 20's on same drving styleD4 HSE - Aintree Green

I find the best MPG I acheive with the expo rack is sub 40mpg. The only problem is at that speed the place you were going to is shut by the time you get there, so you have to do the journey twice!

All tips very welcome.
I've just completed a 164 mile round trip (for a yacht club meeting that lasted 2 hours…! )
I had you in mind when I set out this morning and decided to see what the best mpg I could get by the time I got back home again.
The trip can be divided almost equally into three parts; namely free way, mountain passes & undulating.
I stuck to our national speed limit: 75mph on the free way and undulating sections – and 50mph over the mountains (this may sound excessive, but the roads are for the most part duel carriage ways, or very wide where reduced to single carriage way)
My average speed was 52 mph
My consumption was 30.6mpg
Although my is automatic, I kept an eye on what gears the auto box selected - and with the exception of the climb up the mountain passes (where 5th and 4th were selected) the auto box remained glued to 6th gear and could not wait to get back to that cog.
For the purpose of the exercise, I used the cruise control about half the trip (each way)
I doubt I will do this again. I enjoy driving too much
