Should I sell my trusted disco 3 with a 145k miles |
|
Hi
First time on the site so sorry for any mistakes, I can't decide whether I should sell my disco 3 with a 145k miles. I have had the car since new always had dealer service etc. I can't afford a newer one and am worried about big repair bills. I had some big work done last year at land rover track, rod ends erg valves and much more came to 4 grand. a judder is starting to develop at mid range speeds on the motorway kind of like a slipping clutch. I had the gearbox mega flush done in the summer which stopped the judder on pull off and the passenger door does not lock and sometimes the remote key fob does not activate the central locking also the air seems to come out of the suspension when left for a few days but seems fine when you get going.
I love the car and works not good enough for a new one so have looked at Nissan navara's around 10 - 13k with low mileage don't want to do this but is it a safer bet??? I hope not
Any advice and any recommendations for a decent garage near leighton buzzard would be very appreciated

Welcome to the site Ozz,
I recommend you contact site sponsor Ten For Cash/ off road essentials.
This man is legend and there is zero he doesn't know about the D3.
He can help you decide how much work, if any it needs.
Secondly look up character on this site who has a D3 for his work that he uses daily at over 360k on the clock!!
Hope this helps as you won't like a naffarra after a D3!!

Couldn't agree more, he is a legend when it comes to D3's PRIDE OF NORTH LONDON

From personal experience and the way I'm looking at things presently, like you I cannot justify the cost of a newer d3 or d4 and having covered 388k so far in me 05/55 auto, the repair bills are relative to the mileage, ie things you've mentioned are expected to be replaced after such mileage. Apart from the rear upper bushes, battery/alternator, brake discs/pads and perhaps the old thing here and there its should be good to go for another 100k before the next round of replacing the same parts comes up again.
Interesting enough during the same period you are likely to spend a similar if not more money on a Nissan (if it goes for that long and believe me I have collected enough of the things after being totally knackered) with the residual values and market appeal being a lot less than a fully dealer maintained D3.
So from someone who does alot more miles than you, I would suggest keeping the D3 and looking for the expert care and attension a good indi or 10forcash

Thanks for the advice, I was hoping this would be the case!!! It would be hard to have a Nissan when I'm use to the best
Anyone have any ideas on the juddering sensation when traveling on motorway it feels like something is slipping and is different to the juddering on take off which the megaflush solved.
Thanks again and here's to the next 140k miles

does the juddering happen at a certain speed as it might be your front wheels needing re-ballanced ,or dirt on the inside of the wheel acting as a weight giving a judder also

It happens between 60 / 70 mph. It started in the snow when there was a lot of snow and ice on the under carriage perhaps some dirt could be left over from then will check it out thanks mate

Hi Deb
You can't blame the D3 for the caliper fault. I suspect that it was something that should have been picked up with brake service. Brakes are consumables and dependent on how the po treated them. Once the caliper is fixed, they should be right for the predictable future. However, the epb is another matter.
Further, cambelt and service are standard at 105K miles (or equivalent time) and so predictable.
As you've had the D3 for only 3 months, you can't tell how the po treated the clutch and so clutch and flywheel should now be fine for the predictable future.
It sounds like you bought the D3 privately and so have no warranty. This is why some people buy from dealers.
Whenever you buy a 2nd hand vehicle, you have to expect some faults to show up initially. Once they have been fixed, your permagrin should be restored.
Best of Luck,
