The owners manual (Page 158 in mine) says to put the box into "N" when stationary for short periods of time, such as at traffic lights.

Thinking outside the gearbox |
|
If you don't have the gearbox in "N" the stop/start will not activate
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

In my manual it says 'When stationary put in N, as the Air-Con etc works better"
I always did that in my TD5 Auto too. 210,000km and no auto-box issues Discovery 4 2.7 SE

in my FFRR there is a tiny vibration if I leave it in D and wait at an intersection, so I end up putting it in N if there is a long wait.
I should really go and get the stealer to investigate, but I am tired of wasting my time, and will wait till something breaks...
thats what the extended 6-year motorplan is all about

I slip it into neutral and apply the parking brake.
I suppose I do this for various reasons:
a) so that I don't accidentally move forwards - endangering pedestians in front of me,
b) so that I don't have to stand on the foot brake for long periods of time - blinding people behind with my lights,
c) so that my car is completely secure and stationary - in case the car in front rolls back, or the car behind drives into me....
...but mainly I do this because it is the widely viewed 'correct' way to drive an auto. Previous cars

I recon that sitting at the lights or waiting at a junction for what must amount to just a few seconds is a lot less damaging than crawling for miles in city centre traffic at about 10mph.
