Land Rover recommend that the ignition isn't switched on if you put petrol in a diesel. Even the in tank pump can be damaged.

Strange how it all pans out, my Mitsubishi L200 handbook actually recommends about 1 gall of petrol to full tank of diesel in winter to prevent waxing, different engine I know but the amount put in is important, if more than20% petrol then flush. Otherwise keep filling with diesel every opportunity to lessen the concentration. 8)

Lower pressure fuel systems do tolerate reduced lubrication. Sadly the TDV6 engine in the D3/D4 is not one of them and the trend for economy/emission reasons is for high pressure fuel systems.

With any petrol contamination you want to remove it before it gets to the fuel system. Remember that hardly any of the fuel drawn from the tank is actually burnt in the engine; the vast majority returns to the tank after it's trip through the LP and HP fuel systems.

The HP pump runs with the ignition on, together with the low pressure pump in the tank. The caution relates to the HP pump, not the tank pump. You can isolate the tank pump and then run it to empty a misfuelled tank. The process is on the forum. You need a length of tubing and a piece wire. Visit simple on a D3. Not had to try it on a D4, thankfully.
