Importing accessories from the US

It's that winch thing again....

If (and it's a big if) I go down the electric winch route, I've seen some pretty alarming discrepancies in the cost of winches here vs in the US. As an example, the Tabor 12k retails in the US for under $600 (£300) while you'll struggle to find it in the UK for under £650. Now I know I will need to add VAT to the sales and delivery costs, but that still leaves a healthy amount of TFC-purchasing power in my wallet.

Anyone here imported items of that size/value from the US able to wag their fingers and warn me against this?

Devon4x4 have it for £535, but you have to add Vear And Tear to that. Not seen it cheaper when googling, but may not be looking in the right places?

Proobably around 50KG I'd say. 32KG is the limit for check in baggage for me (Virgin; not sure if others are the same or not) - if you can find one weighing that or less, I'll bring one back for you in next week Wink

Did a bit of searching and the Tabor 12k you mentioned (seems to be lighter than a smaller Warn!) is 39.5KG. Now I wonder if that's with or without the steel wire? Question

Everyone seems to list it with 80' of cable, but no idea if the weights include it. I would be surprised if it did?

I have an address in the USA that forwards goods.

They charge $29.95 for the main postage including 1lb
Each additional 1lb is $5.95

Normally here in 3-5 days.

But that would work out very expensive.

Importing from US

I looked at this ages ago, My advise forget it. Firstly shipping costs, then VAT, import duty. And to top it all what are you going to do if it brakes ? (and if it's electric it will)

where as if you purchase locally from some one you buy other stuff from they are more likley to help you when you have a problem, and if they dont, then you can always go round and Censored it through there window.
