In to LR for PAS, now need rods, column, lower arms

My D3 (TDV6) 54 plate as developed a steering problem. It is heavy then light and the wheel does not return when going round corners, I have to in effect turn the wheels back.

It started about 6 weeks ago when I go mud and silt into the engine bay from driving off road, I was advised to give the belt and pulleys a wash through as they maybe slipping. I did this and the car felt as it should for about 2 days.

The issue reoccurred although it did not feel as bad as before. I have spoken to another source whom said it was likely to be the Power Steering Pump. I now have a new pump, but realised there maybe more work involved fitting it than maybe my expertise would lead to and still unsure I have fully diagnosed the extent of my issue!

Therefore I have run the vehicle to an independent, one whom I trust, but is not specifically a LR specialist, but experienced mechanic?s nonetheless.

They were too, unsure of the cause of the issue however on inspecting the Power Steering Fluid comment that, it is particularly dark, has a very burn smell, very metallicy and it contained little dark bits. I saw them do this, so I know the sample is genuine.

They have advised me it is likely to be that the steering rack as failed and broken up, the bits are now in the plump and fluid. Therefore the rack and pump will need replacing and the system flushed out.

Does this sound genuine, and is it something I could do myself. Generally I am looking for comments and advise before I splash the cash?!

Sounds just like what i had 18 months ago.

Steering was very stiff and "notchy"

at first it was diagnosed as a dodgy steering pump but when the dealer looked at it they diagnosed the steering rack. they replaced the joints and all was well.

Dont know about the cost as it was done under warranty..

2 independant garages and they could not diagnose the issue Evil or Very Mad .

Gave it to LR in the end, they checked it and came back with the following. This infois straight off their tech sheet they emailed me.

BOTH STEERING RACK TIE RODS WORN
4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT
ROD - TIE
NUT - HEX.
BOTH LOWER FRONT BALL JOINTS PLAY & BUSHES WORN OUT
KNOCKING REQUIRES LOWER ARMS
ARM ASSY - FRONT
NUT - FLANGED
BOLT
WASHER
Other:
LOWER STEERING COLUMN WORN
BOLT
ALL ABOVE RQ'ED THEN RECHECK PAS OPERATION

Big quote Shocked , but even then they do not gaurantee this is the issue/fault. after reading round the forum I am going to do the front arms with ball joints and bushes myself and do the tie rods, as the info on the D3 fourm is excellent. I will get the realingment done by a specialist.I do not know how to do the lower steering column, does anyone know how to do this or can offer any advice on the above?

I am also a little confused as all the posts on the forum i have researched for carrying the above work out, were originally raised due to knocking, banging etc fromthe steering. I dont have this, how would LR of diagnosed all of the above, would it have been just on inspection? Thumbs Up
