Alternator Gone?

Put car in garage last night no problems. Just got in now, started fine but battery light on. Quick drive round the block and it doesn't go out. Put car in garage lift bonnet and there is a faint smell of burning.

I'm assuming alternator as gone as the car had a new battery 12 months ago.

Should I disconnect the battery whilst I sort a new alternator out?

Yes - Alternator - Classic symptoms, disconnect the battery just in case.

We have plenty of stock of the new Denso unit if you want one.

Battery disconnected but volts down to 12 after disconnection measured with crappy chinese voltmeter so probably not a reliable reading.

Have the battery fully charged, before fitting the new alternator.

It has been known for some of them to fail, due to a huge voltage spike with a drained battery Thumbs Up

Have also been getting intermittent suspension warning, fixed height etc. and garage read fault code C1A20-64 i.e. low pressure filling air tank last Saturday. Given compressor must be big current draw I wonder if alternator has been on its way out for a while and hence not enough power to allow compressor to do its job properly ....long shot I know. I was in for a compressor in the Dec pay day anyway ...........

No other signs of limited power e.g. poor starting etc. so probably just coincidence. Car is 55 plate with 102,000 miles.

I got all sorts of suspension and drive faults when mine went. Put your battery on charge (disconnected) whilst you fit the new alternator and all should be fine. Good luck with getting the fan off! Thumbs Up

Same happened to me a couple of weeks ago, Numpty. I'd been experiencing some oddness from the stereo (like not waking-up properly and only switching itself on a couple of minutes after the engine had started) and the odd spurious message.

I bought a BOG alternator kit and replaced it myself in about an hour:

http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/00d3a-den...3722-p.asp

The viscous fan tools are worth having and it's not a lot of effort to replace the ancillary belt whilst you've got it apart (for what little they cost).

Replacement instructions here:

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic82516.html

The biggest problem you're likely to face is getting the fan off. The rest is simples. Thumbs Up

New alternator is now chucking out a very healthy 15.2v.

I had the and replaced the alternator and aux belt (simple DIY job as per the 'How To' on here) however burning smell is still there, any ideas what to replace next? Large Intercooler pipe perhaps (original on since new)?
