Interesting article on the testing of Mobil 1 oil.

Good info as to when to do oil changes.

I'd be reluctant to extend these results for a petrol engine to a diesel. I have had a bit of experience with oil analysis of both mineral and synthetic lubricants in large (500HP+) truck diesels and while those engines work harder than most of our Discos, the oils showed a steady accumulation of abrasives ( carbon and silicon) and an increase in acidity after relatively short periods, as well as fuel dilution. And this was with engines which were used on long-distance operations and thus thoroughly warmed up.

I certainly would not risk extended oil changes with the highly-tuned Td6, especially when used for short runs which do not allow oil temp. to rise to normal levels.

And on a slightly different note, a discussion with a Mobil lube specialist the other day revealed that long-term (12 months or more) storage of synthetic oils may not be a good thing - apparently some components of the oil will separate if it is left undisturbed and a good shake-up is not sufficient to re-blend it. So don't stock up with too much when you see it on sale!

I thought the general idea was that if the engine uses no oil (as most TDV6's don't after the initial period) then the oil should be changed more frequently.

I think the long lasting qualities of Mobil 1 are well-proven as Porsche are quoting 20k service intervals for the new 911, Boxster and Cayman range. I agree with the concern about diesel engines though.

Peugeot Citroen quote 20,000 / 2 Year for Petrol engines BUT only 10,000 / 1 Year for Diesels

mobil 1

I have a leaflet that shows a Mobil 1 test a few years ago. They took a brand new 3 series BMW, put in Mobil 1 and ran the car for 1,000,000 miles on a rolling road. Then removed the engine, stripped it down and measured all the components, which were all still inside the manufacturers tolerances.

This was a big sales ploy for Mobil1 (and BMW) some years ago and was proved to be a flawed concept.

The vast bulk of engine wear is caused at start-up when cold - especially under v.cold ambient temperatures, and under heavy load eg. towing or harsh acceleration.

A rolling road for 1 million miles would probably have provided the same resuilts even if they were using Spry Crisp & Dry Shocked Laughing

In truth, I have a lot of time for Mobil1 but not becuase of this particular marketing ploy. Looked good to the great unwashed though..... Wink

Still- one million miles without an oil change is very impressive!
