Intermittent special programs failure! Help.

Hi,

Long story short.
* I have had a couple of events where the voltage in the car has noticeably dropped while the car was running close to idle. It even turned off. (while offroading and the off-road lights were on, feeding from the 2nd battery).
* I used the black-box reset tool to clear all the errors.
* couple of days later, when I started the car up, it gave me the message that low gear was not available.
* re-started the car... All worked (tried low gear).
* keeps on happening, and even a couple of times it says special programs not available.
* all errors are communications errors!
* ONCE I got a low-voltage from alternator error.
* I do have the 2nd battery setup, so I disconnected the charger to debug. But still the problem.
* Car has 18k miles.

I'm taking the car to the dealer, hopefully they will not notice the 2nd battery (I will take off the charging cable).

Could It really be the alternator? Could the charger have damaged it or the battery? Could all the use of the winch (when I only had one battery) have contributed to this?

Thanks.

did you have the engine running when winching ? If not, that could have damaged the main battery as a winch will be quite a draw on the power.

Always keep the engine running. I actually hate to turn it off when off-roading. Just in case it would not start up. Also, I would think that the engine running will keep the cooling system working since it gets pretty hot here in the tropics.

Sounds like a problem with either the main battery or the alternator.

I'm having issues on the D4 which at first seemed to be battery related but on a recent trip to Tunisia we found it's an intermittent Alternator issue where the alternator output drops well below it's max and even below the draw on the battery Confused

Well, took it to the dealer. They did not find any problems and just reset the computers.

I gave them hell! Since I have the scanner, I had proof of the errors when the car came in... So after screaming to the service manager, I took the car home (friday) with the promise I would come back monday with the problem and the error codes....

And... Yes the errors of 'special programs not available' re-appeared, randomly...

So I took a video of the car errors, and the scanner codes.... Going in tomorrow... We'll see....

Any idea on how I can prove battery/alternator problems?

Hi Roveribis,
The best way to check is to swap the starting battery out (it would seem that battery diagnostic checks aren't very reliable for the Calcium batteries).

Well, Problem persists. New AGM type battery.
Still, sometimes when car is started up, I get the system failure error.
I then re-start the car, and it goes away...

It's driving me crazy, I have the 24hr competition comming up....

I have noticed that if when I get in the car and move the ignition to just before startup and leave it there for 30secs. the problem does not appear.... But since it's intermittent it might take me a while to confirm...

GURUS out there, any ideas!? Big Cry

The dealer is cluless. Their T4 does not report any error codes (eventhough my FCR does).

Do you have another dealer in the area? If so go there and ask them to look at it.

Goot thing it's a tropical-rainforest with lots of mountains, fun for 4x4 and MTB. Thumbs Up

Hmmm - try sending an email to LR Customer Service providing the Fault codes and asking why their dealer don't have the standard IDS system for interogating the vehicles fault codes - I wouldn't mention you have another type of faultcode reader

Well I decided to get a new TransferBoxModule. I will be installing next week.
I really do not have the time/energy to fight with the (only) local dealer.
Specially since as a prevention, I had 'sealed' this module to protect it from water damage, so I'm sure they will use that as an excuse. When I did this, I found the terminals in the mocule corroded...
It the this does not fix the problem, I will either sell the used one or keep it as spare...

Well I think I found the gremlin...

Took the Bosch transfer module out and again found that the computer pins were 'corroded' with the greenpeace junk. So i cleaned IT again re-sealed and installed.

Error codes have not repeated! 3 days so far...
