3G connection in the central belt is very poor. At home I cannot get 3G or at most one bar of signal, but I use home wi-fi anyway. When out and about the free wi-fi connections available are plentiful. In fact sitting at home I can choose a couple of neighbours connections if I desired
As a phone I love it. Apps are very good and using the apple me.com to update and sync calendar on outlook and the phone is very useful
As the wife says, it's something else I've never got out my hand I think i'd struggle going back to a 'normal' phone and interface now.

The only dowside to the Iphone is battery life as you'll find out. I started to watch the vietnam top gear special on iplayer on the phone with >50% battery left. Lasted <10 mins
I have backup chargers in the D3 (also ACM unit), in the wifes car and in the van. If you only make calls it'll last a couple of days, depending on how much you blether on. If you download games apps, then dont stray too far from a charger. Current game is field runner

Was told that "normal" iPod chargers don't work with the iPhone, U need special ones. Any truth in this? Have the ACM in the D3 and a cheapie at home.

I've used the charger from my ipod on the phone with no issues. Or none that I know of I cannot imagine there is that much difference in charge rates or charge consumption between Ipods and phones. Or maybe I'm slowly killing the phone battery with dosing it with the wrong amount of mA's
nah, it'll be fine

Any dock connector charger should charge the iPhone or ipod (with dock connector) fine. As long as its 'Designed for iPod / iPhone' branded.
The only difference between the iPhone and iPhone 3G is that the audio side of the dock connector has been changed. You will likely need a new cable for the LR iPod connection kit to ensure music plays.
Apple changed it for some unknown reason.
If you have an old iPod dock music player, it will likely not work and the iPhone will start off OK and then tell you its not compatible

Simon my son's pure fi dock says its not compatible, but still plays as does his griffin fm transmitter. Battery life is the biggest fault though.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Yep, says its not compatible... no idea why, but some play music for a short time others play all the time. Message always the same.

I am not sure the audio on the bottom socket has changed as my iphone 3G works in all my old docks etc just fine as far as the audio is concerned but doesn't charge in the apple speakers or the Bose dock.
Battery life is quite dependant on how you 'condition' the batteries when you first get the phone. Try to resist the temptation to play and just put it on charge for 24 hours first. Then cycle the batteries 3 or 4 times by using the phone until flat and then fully charging (At least 12 hours)
After this just charge every night, all night.
In theory this conditioning should not be required as the 3G has lithium batteries but for some reason it makes a huge difference.
Turn off blue tooth and the GPS (location services) if you don't need them..

The confusion over different power cables is because Apple have changed the pins in the dock connector used for charging both iPod's & iPhones. Originally firewire was the preferred power source and then to make things easier for PC users, iPod docks were made compatible with USB power (5v). For a while they would accept both formats (using different pins) but now only USB powered cables are supported. This is what makes many of the older cables (or anything badly wired) incompatible with the iPhone. Firewire could provide 12v, and that's what made it so attractive to manufacturers of all those cheap car adaptors which now don''t work!
I don't believe the dock audio connections have changed at all, but you'll get the incompatible message on the iPhone whenever the firewire pins make a connection?
I use the cable from apple...

Dock connector gives 'line level' to the aux socket for great sound (now wired into the passenger footwell) and the usb plugs into a cig lighter adaptor to charge. Volume on radio dips when a call comes in and my bluetooth continues to work as normal. Also if you extend the video inputs from the back of the nav screen you can use the same lead to run video from your iPhone to your TV screen! (no silly messages about compatibility either) Forget in-car PC's the iPhone's like having an in-car mac!
All works perfectly. 2005 D3 HSE 2011 D4 Landmark 2016 D4 HSE Lux
