Expensive it sure is however it is the 'proper' way of hooking an iPod in to a D3.
You can also go through the FAKRA ports on the back of the head unit using the cable in the shop and a little more jiggery pokery. Which is a lot less expensive but still isn't a perfect solution as you don't get steering wheel control.
