WHy is it called a D4/LR4

Having owned all the Discos since it was produced, I strike this as funny that they call this one a D4.

I had a 91 Disco with the fugly blue interior and the small headlights, and the 3.5 v8.
In 94 they brought out the updated version with the 3.9v8. Still a Disco1 but with new dash and lights.

In 99 the all new Disco2 came out. All new body panels and new engine with new electronics. In 2003 they brought out the facelift version, and I got that as well, with all the 750 changes advertised, and this was still a D2.

Now having had two D3's they bring out a Facelift model with a new dash, and new engines and call it a D4.

WTF, it's still a D3 facelift.

My 2c's worth

I agree with you on this one Pierre. Marketing at it's finest.Speaking up on this might get you branded as a knuckle dragger.

Look forward to getting a spin in the facelift/enginelift/dashlift D3 though.

I think I have earned the right to be called a knuckle dragger. Rolling with laughter

I have owned LR's manufactured by British Leyland, AAD, BMW, Ford, and will some day own one made by Tata, if not sold to someone else before hand. Thumbs Up

THAT's why they've called it the D4!
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you.

We can probably expect a lot of bling options in the accessories, .i.e. Chrome Lettering, Chrome LR Badges etc. Rolling with laughter

In 1994, many changes were made to the Discovery I and reached some markets as "Discovery 2"; the 200Tdi and 3.5 L V8 engines were replaced with the 2.5 L 300TDi 4-cylinder and 3.9 L Rover V8 engines, the 300Tdi introducing a Bosch electronic emissions control for certain models and markets.

So, in some markets there's the Disco 1, Disco 2, Real Disco 2, LR3 & LR4.

But the reality should be: Disco 1 (200 series), Disco 2 (300 series), Disco 3 (Series II), Disco 4 (Series II faceift), Disco 5 (LR3), Disco 6 (LR4)

This is going to be the eternal debate, however I personally think it's to fit in with the new LR4 name in the US, which leaves the LR3 name for a new 7 seater Freelander (LR2) variant.

Can they shift/juxtapose model names just like that Martin , would it not lead to a lot of confusion ?

was chatting to a LR bod a few weeks back and he said to be deemed a new model it only needed xx amount of new parts, considering the d4 has a whole new engine amongst other things it is allowed to be called it..

If that was the case, then LR missed the boat when they replaced the TDI with the TD4 motor in the Freelander, and then again with the facelift. We could have been up to LR4 there already.

Then again on the Disco from a 3.5V8 and 200Tdi to the 3.9V8 and 300Tdi on the series 1, and with the 750 changes on the Series II Disco from the original to the facelift.

Then again on the FFRR going from the BMW 4.4V8 to the Jag 4.4V8.

Poor old Defender changed from One Ten and Ninety to Defender 110 and Def 90. That in more than 20 years.

Hopefully I will not buy a Disco 7.5 in 2011, fitted with the new ashtray. Whistle

Makes you wonder why the 911 is an icon, with "sub models" 964, 993, 996, 997 etc. They still stick with the concept, although running model numbers.

I thought it was the same engine but with bigger cylinders and new stuff bolted on Confused

They've upped the capacity to 3.0L and stuck on new common rail injection, EGRs, Turbos/manifolds etc, but I think it is still the same engine isn't it?

20" LR OE factory alloy wheels for new D4

Does this mean that the steering on the D4 will be
damped like the Sport, to cope with the extra vibration
through the wheels/tyres........ or will it be the bumpy
D3 style ride and LR just want the money?
