Being a tight Scotsman,I'm going to hold fire for a while.
Genuinely believe the D3 depreciation curve has/is bottoming out, whereas the D4 depreciation curve has just started...... Whistle

Ducking for cover and waiting for the howls of derision from shiny D4 owners Bow down
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Hanging on to mine til it falls apart, just not worth the money to change for what I do with it.

I have been thinking about it for a while, but love the spec of my d3 met.

I have looked at a few D4's and they dont have the things I need in the d3, i.e.

cubby box fridge
rear aircon (including the boot area)
rear seat entertainment

I know the cubby box fridge and rse are options, but what the rear aircon?

Mine is in the dealers now for a service and inspection. I know it needs a few things, steering busher thingy and new park sensor. But if they find lots of other things, I need to work out wether to trade in or not.

The thing that got me really thinking was dependability. I have spent a fair bit on mine, on just normal routine maintenance this year, The big service and new brakes, which should make it dependable, but as with any car that is nearly 5 and has over 100k on it, there must be things starting to wear out, any of which could bring a journey to an unscheduled halt.

Having said that, I know any car new or old can possibly fail, and lets be honest, a D4 probably has a higher chance of that compared to certain other marks, but the overall package just means that nothing else pulls the heartstrings quite as much.

D4s do seem to be a good bit better than the D3 at the same sage in it's life. No tales of woe re the old favourites like EGRs & EPB but have a few of their own, electrical drain, restricted performance & hesitation spring to mind. Mind you at the 3 - 4 year stage the D3 engine was described as bomb proof, will be interesting to see how the 3.0 lump fares at the same age as the 07 D3s are at now.

Releability is the thing that has got me thinking, the wife is due our first baby in May and I dont want her stranded at the side of the road with the new born.

I have spent a lot over the last year, new pads and discs all round, new hub assembies ont he front, track rod ends, oh and new calipers all round.

Then, I developed the steering bush knock, one of the park sensors is playng up, I intermitantly get the transmission failure and go into limp mode. Getting very strong fumes int he car aswell Big Cry

I can chuck some more money at the car to get all that sorted, but for how long before something else goes wrong.......

I can't get my head around the changing, mine is a 58 plate, done low miles, had it's niggles at the start (Turbo e.t.c.) but for the last 3 yrs run like a dream, I am of the opinion that if it aint broke don't fix it, it looks like new, looks no different really to a D4 to the regular persons eye and I could not justify the price of upgrading with all this in mind.

Mind you if I was minted like some on here fair doos, I would go for it, but for pensioners on a budget we need to be a bit careful before splashing out on things we don't really need! Thumbs Up

Not as far as I know, but I never had it on the 3, so not personally going to miss it.

United Kingdom 2009 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 XS Auto Siberian SilverDiscovery 4

Last week I was in the exact same place as you...
This week I am now driving my new (to me!) D4 and know I have made the right decision.

My '05' D3 had 157 k on it when they took it as PX and had been reasonably well looked after from a service and mecanical repairs point of view (belts done n time, new front wish bones, new gear box, new intercooler etc etc)

But at what point do you stop saying 'I will run it a bit longer just to get my money back on the major repairs' while the rest of the vehicle is still getting older and it still needs routine stuff doing? which is costing you all the time.

How I figured it was that I only needed one more major thing to go (engine or turbo perhaps) and it was scrap anyway as I wouldnt then want to spend what was effectively a depoist on a replacement.

I would have scraped the D3 and just used the repair money towards a secondhand D4 - so thats what I did but now while the D3 still had some equity left in it to increase the deposit and decrease what I needed to find.

Just do it - you can't take it with you!

First impressions of the D4 - Censored love it!

Better ride, faster pick up and more comfortable cruising... had to fork out a bit more than I wanted too though to get an XS as the GS just seems sooooo under speced compared to the SE I had and I knew I would never be happy without my toys!

If you are anywhere near me (Lincolnshire) and want to have a play in one, let me know and I will happily help convince you!

Interesting post, I guess the age and mileage of yours makes sense to chop in, so when it talks about changing perhaps it should also look at age and mileage at change, do many change just for the hell of it say every 3yrs no matter what?

no, its not an option on UK models.

I had it on the D3 and thought I (well the Dog Rolling Eyes ) would miss it - not missed it so far, but our trip to Spain in June may prove otherwise !!

Dogs are the main thing we use it for, when they have been out working and are wet/cold, I can stick the rear aircon on hot to warm them up/dry them out, while we are in the front with it on 21.5.

Mine is a 56 plate met with 108k on the clock.

The other thing is that the dealer wants everything putting back as is should be on the car. i.e. hse alloys on instead of the supercharged, egr valves putting back in, cat pipe (sat in my shed) putting back on before they will accept it.

I will also strip out the hybrid tv, reverse camera etc that I have installed. So all in all a lot of work.......
