In my D3 (manual) the cruise control disengages if I touch the brakes. I would expect that auto D3s & D4s would behave similarly. Have you tried this?

Brakes cancels CC but so does the cancel button without the possibility of applying the brakes unnecessarily. However my expectation is that CC should totally cut fuel to be doing its best to prevent overrun, yet it does not. Cancelling CC cuts fuel totally and often that is sufficient to prevent run-away on some descents, ie lifting totally off the accelerator.

Needless to say I've used CC many times before, but never had this...
Set the Cruise Control at 65-70mph for a drive along the M4 yesterday and found the cruise would drop 1mph below the set speed, then surge up to the required speed only to drop back own by 1mph and repeat continuously. It didn't matter as to what speed I set the CC to, whether I set it a the speed travelling or when up or down a few mph with the buttons. I also tried switching of the A/C but nothing made a difference and I continued to get the problem o n the return journey after a 2hr break.
I also tried to see if it did this when not using CC i.e. by holding the pedal in one place, and thought it was there also, but because of undulately road and traffic it was very difficult to prove conclusively without CC being set.
Anyone had similar and know possible cause/solution before I goes to the dealers?

Mine did this:
Reseting gearbox (adaptative and clutch, there are 2 types of reset) and setting the gearpoints the first time DINAMICALLY (ie, car moving, not an ramp in dealer) cured it 100%.
Dealer said that there are a TSB about it...
No more "Kangarooing" after that.

Ahhh thank you!!!!!! I put a post up recently about my D4 dropping 1mph and then surging, didn't get a response but this looks like the solution, booking into the stealers, or is this reset a DIY job?

The fix was under warranty so it was a dealer work. I understand that maybe someone with a faultmate could do it too, but I don't really know as I don't have one near me, there are plenty here so they could investigate between the spread of option they have and say "here is it!!" to all us. (Thanks in advance)
I was surprised of the two types of reset, I only had news in the beginning of the adaptative one, the second type is a clutches (gearbox and torque converter both included) adjustment type.... The problem is like if they start slipping too much so "a little half a turn more" from the electronics to them do the trick.

Mr H, if you could that would be great as my discussions so far with the dealer hasn't given me the confidence that I am going to get a huge bill in diagnosis and going down the wrong track.

Sorry Alistair, got the D4 back just now and they've been unable to find a TSB relating to this problem, but they have done a reset for me so fingers crossed it'll be resolved. Maybe CUCO can go back to his dealers and ask them to check the vehicle history, it should state in that what TSBs have been applied to it.
